– Time For A Tiara: Column by Ginna Young –
I’ve always been fascinated by magnets, how even the smallest one can lift a larger object and hold it suspended in mid-air. However, not everything that is magnetized, is good.
For example, vehicles. Some just attract accidents like they are magnets.
My previous one was like that. While I only had one fender bender with it (which was one too many for my liking), I can’t count how many times someone would almost side swipe me, start to back out or pull out in front of me, before slamming on their brakes.
Judging by their startled and puzzled looks, the drivers of the other vehicles didn’t even notice me. It couldn’t be because I was in too small a conveyance, because I had a honking big SUV.
That was just an accident-waiting-to-happen car.
Then, there was Um, my co-worker’s former car, so named, because when thinking of a name, the only one we could come up with was, ummmmm. Poor Um. That thing had more misfortunes than I can mention.
The first time it was involved in an accident, it was parked outside the office. We still had the old Courier building then and it had no windows where the desks were. One day, a loud crash was heard right outside and Rebecca remarked that it better not be her car.
She went to the door and looked out, and yep, “It is my car!”
A driver came careening around the corner too fast on slushy, icy roads and smashed into the back of Um. Thankfully, it could be fixed.
Not long after that, Rebecca had just pulled into the store parking lot and was reaching into the backseat for her bag, when the car suddenly moved a few inches ahead. Someone had backed out and smacked into the car. Again.
Luckily, in both cases, no one was injured and Um was repaired, but Rebecca did have to go to bat for herself in the second instance. The officer at the time, was going to give her a ticket, but she made it loudly clear that she was PARKED and not at fault, so, even though he’d seen combat, he’d never seen anything like her and backed down from his stance.
And now, we come to my co-worker Joy. Alas, that truck has been doomed since they first turned the key in the ignition. Known affectionately as Link, this poor automobile is a deer magnet. It has had unfortunate encounters with not one, not two, not three, but FOUR separate deer.
There again, no one was injured and the truck was able to be fixed, although, I think this last time may be the end for it, as it was the most damage. What a deer magnet.
So, if anyone can identify with having a “magnet” for a vehicle, you may want to trade up and quickly!
