20 Years Ago – 2004 Lake Holcombe’s volleyball program brings home the silver at the State tournament, finishing runnerup against Williams Bay. Led by coach Jean Anderson, the team advanced through the Division 4 playoffs to achieve the feat.
30 Years Ago – 1994 About $100,000 is committed for repair on Cobban Bridge, through Chippewa County, while 80 percent of the costs, estimated at $480,000, will come from a grant. The move comes after outcry from the public to extend the life of the aging structure.
40 Years Ago – 1984 Cornell’s coaching staff gave a “thumbs down” to the WIAA realigning the Cloverbelt Conference, in preference to seeking affiliation with the Lakeland Conference. Cornell is a charter member of the Cloverbelt and has the smallest enrollment of 228.
50 Years Ago – 1974 A skating rink is installed on the infield of Cadott’s softball field, with sand bags for a water barrier. The site was chosen because of its accessibility, the lights, and benches that can be used for changing and resting.
60 Years Ago – 1964 The St. Regis Paper Company is presented with a Fire Brigade Excellence Award, only one of five plants in the country. The award was established to honor the men in the volunteer units at the company’s plants across the nation. 100 Years Ago – 1924 All Ford touring cars will be licensed in Class B in 1925, unless they have reached the age of five years. The fee will be $11, while Ford roadsters will be Class A ($10) and Ford sedans are Class B ($12). Last year, a distinction was made between Ford touring cars equipped with selfstarter and demountable rims, and those that are not.
