Saunas have been providing health benefits to people for over 2000 years. The first sauna ever created was a simple hole dug into the ground of an embankment in Finland. Since then, saunas have become quite common and come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and types. Some even come on wheels.

Brad Weiler of Medford, started his mobile sauna business, Black River Sauna, following his introduction to saunas through his brother-in-law Ben Gruetzmacher, owner of Prairiewood Saunas. After the introduction, Weiler claimed that he was “hooked.” He realized that a sauna could be very beneficial to the community, and he wanted to be the one to make that happen.

Before starting Black River Sauna, Weiler went to school for marketing and even opened up his own marketing company called Black River Brand in 2019. Given this previous experience, opening up a sauna business made perfect sense and allowed Weiler to expand his original company.

The sauna started off as a completely empty trailer but thanks to Weiler’s brother-in-law, quickly evolved into a fully equipped mobile sauna with a wood fired heater and changing room.

“They were very impressed with the quality,” said Weiler when talking about the community’s Saunas not only provide physical benefits such as pain relief, detoxification, and reduced blood pressure, but they are also known to help boost people’s mental health.

“I feel strongly about making health accessible,” Weiler stated when explaining why he started Black River Sauna. Since its opening, the sauna has been showcased at Maple Fest and the Pine Line Marathon. Weiler hopes to bring the sauna to many more events and has recently partnered up with Stronger Version Fitness to make the sauna more readily accessible to the community. Now the sauna will be available for gym members to rent out on a regular basis for a set price.

Once everything is fully up and running, anyone in the community will be able to rent the trailer for private purposes and events. Weiler has not set a price for these private rentals but said that the price will most likely depend on the season.
