Trees fall around Cornell, after a record low pressure storm passes through the area, with high winds and driving rain. The low pressure is reported to be that of a Class 3 hurricane.
20 Years Ago – 2000
The Cadott School District is set for a remodeling and building project, once the public gives their approval. The district is working with financial planner Vincent Lyles on how to get the best deal for their money.
30 Years Ago – 1990
The Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department issues a warning to the public about false fire inspections that have taken place in the area. In the fraud, a person appears at a home, stating they are a fire inspector, finds fault with the wiring, then charges a large sum for repair.
40 Years Ago – 1980
The Lear family home, west of Cadott, could be one of, if not the oldest, farms in the area, as it dates back to 1882 on paper. However, the family was there long before that, as the family lived in a log cabin in the woods, among the indigenous natives.
50 Years Ago – 1970
Cornell native Staff Sgt. Darwin Premo is the recipient of the Bronze Star, for his actions while in Vietnam. Premo previously was awarded the National Defense Service Medal.
60 Years Ago – 1960
Weather conditions are blamed for what could be one of the worst deer seasons in many a year. With forests too dry, deer signs abound, but hunters may not be able to spot or track their prey without sufficient amounts of snow.
100 Years Ago – 1920
Several farmers have lost sheep to the oversupply of wolves in this section. It’s not uncommon for motorists to see a pack along the highways. One of the Walter boys from Holcombe, even hit down a good-sized wolf on his way home. With a $25 bounty each on their heads, wolves may not have the upper hand for long.
