Greenwood explodes for 80 points in first 8-man win

It took Greenwood a few games and a pair of close losses to get its 8-man legs under itself, but that hapened in a big way on Oct. 9 at Port Edwards. The Indians scored no fewer than 11 touchdowns as they powered past the Blackhawks 80-18 for the first 8-man win in team history.

Most everything worked for Greenwood, as it scored on the ground, through the air, on a kickoff return, and on a punt return. The offense generated 395 yards on 46 total plays.

Three of the scores came in the first quarter as Greenwood rolled to an 18-0 lead. The touchdowns came on a 29-yard Sullivan Whitford run and a 14-yard Cooper Bredlau run, and the Indian defense added a safety.

In the second period, Greenwood got touchdowns on a 10-yard Xander Hinker run, a 22-yard Bredlau run, a 20-yard Hinker run and a 40-yard pass play between Bredlau and Whitford for a 46-0 lead.

Port Edwards got on the board late in the half on a 65-yard pass play.

The second half saw little change as Whitford opened it with an 88-yard kickoff return for a score. Hinker added a 24-yard scoring run a bit later, and Bredlau returned a punt 39 yards to the end zone to make it a 68-12 game after three periods.

The last two scores came in the final quarter on a 1-yard Christian Thomas run and a 30-yard run from Kody Johnson with 20 seconds left in the game.

Greenwood did have a bit of trouble with big plays as Port Edwards’ secondhalf scores came on a 51-yard run and a 57-yard pass play.

Greenwood had a balanced ground game as Hinker picked up 75 yards on seven carries, Whitford ran for 70 yards on five attempts, Johnson carried seven times for 67 yards, and Bredlau added 64 yards on nine carries.

Bredlau threw 10 times with four completions for 86 yards. Westen Schmitz caught two passes for 40 yards and Whitford had the 40-yard touchdown catch.

Greenwood’s next game is scheduled for Oct. 16 at Tigerton-Marion.
