Raiders get two singles wins at Pacelli

The Medford Raiders got wins in the top two singles flights, while the host Stevens Point Pacelli Cardinals won the rest of the matches in their 5-2 girls tennis victory Thursday afternoon.

At the time, the win pushed Pacelli to 3-1 in Great Northern Conference play, while Medford slipped to 0-4. The Cardinals added a 4-3 win over Newman Catholic on Tuesday.

The Raiders remained winless in eight dual meets overall but head coach Jake Bucki said Tuesday that while the scores may not always look like it, he feels his team is right there with the solid competition the GNC is offering.

Bucki said Brooke Sommer played a tremendous match in earning her first win of the year at number-one singles a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Amanda Lansing.

At number-two, Sophie Brost made a mid-match adjustment, turned things around just in time and earned an impressive three-set win over Amelia Jacoby. Jacoby won the first set 6-3 and had a 5-4 lead over Brost in the second set. But Brost took the last three games to win the set 7-5 and closed out the match by winning nine straight games with a 6-0 sweep in set three.

Pacelli’s Julia Storch beat Lindsey Wildberg 6-1, 6-3 in the number-three match and Allison Lange beat Autumn Higgins 6-2, 6-0 in flight four.

Pacelli’s state-qualifying team from a year ago, Ella Schroeder and Marissa Stolt, got an early fight from Raiders Jordaan Clark and Kelsey Jascor, but the Cardinals still wound up with a 6-3, 6-0 win in flight-one doubles.

In flight two, Jenna Stolt and Maya Kunze swept Medford’s Myah Smith and Eryka Seidl 6-1, 6-0, while Briar Armatowski and Emily Rosenthal won the number-three match 6-0, 6-1 over Kenya Mann and Makayla Motte.

Since Thursday’s meet, Medford’s planned trip to the Lakeland Quad on Saturday was rained out and a home meet Tuesday with Columbus Catholic was postponed a week to Sept. 22. Two of the teams that were going to be at Lakeland –– the host Thunderbirds and Ashland –– are now planning a trip to Medford for an Oct. 1 non-conference triangular.

Conference play resumes today, Thursday, when Medford visits Phillips. Conference-leading Antigo is in town Sept. 24 for a 4:30 p.m. meet. The Red Robins knocked off defending champion Rhinelander 5-2 on Tuesday.
