Marathon Red Raider Hall of Fame Sunday

Ceremony is on the football field

Five people influential to the success of Marathon High School sports will be inducted into the Marathon Red Raider Athletic Hall of Fame during a ceremony at 1 p.m. this Sunday, Sept. 13, on the high school football field.

If there were inclement weather, then the ceremony would be held in the high school auditorium with COVID precautions as needed.

Class of 2020 Marathon Red Raider Athletic Hall of Fame inductees will be Bill Knetter, Nicole (Reisner) Myszka, Gary Raether, Claude Seubert and Tim Sonnentag.

Larry Buchberger will introduce Knetter into the Marathon Red Raider Athletic Hall of Fame on Sunday, Knetter will introduce (Reisner) Myszka, Raether’s children will introduce him and Jeff Reiche will introduce Sonnentag during the ceremony.

This year’s Marathon Red Raider Athletic Hall of Fame class joins last year’s inaugural five hall of fame class inductees including Tom Weinkauf, Patrick Buchberger, Larry Heindl, Cindy Lensmire and Bill Fischer.

The following are biographies of each 2020 Marathon Red Raider Athletic Hall of Fame inductee:

Nicole (Reisner) Myszka

Nicole (Reisner) Myszka is the alltime leading girl’s basketball scorer in Marathon High School history with 1,4535 points, was first team unanimous all-conference in basketball in the 1995-96 and 1996-97 seasons, was awarded Marawood Conference Player of the Year and second team all-state in the 1996-97 season. She’s a member of the Marathon girl’s state championship basketball team in the 1996-97 season in which she was named to the all-state tournament team. Also, Reisner-Myszka holds Marathon’s school record in both the high jump with five feet, eight inches and long jump with 16 feet, 11-3/4 inches. She was a four-time state qualifier consisting of three years in the high jump and one year in the 100-meter hurdles, she was a WIAA Division 3 state champion in the high jump in 1995, a four-time Marawood Conference champion in the high jump, competed in basketball and track for Winona St. University, she is the third all-time leading scorer in Winona St. women’s basketball history and she was inducted into the Winona State University Athletic Hall of Fame in 2017.

Tim Sonnentag

Tim Sonnentag was a 10-time letterwinner at Marathon High School consisting of three times in both football, basketball and baseball and once in track, was a first team all-Marawood Conference selection in football as a running back and defensive back in 1983 and 1984. he was first team all-conference in basketball in the 1983-84 and 1984-85 seasons, member of Marathon’s state tournament boy’s basketball teams in the 1982-83 and 1983 84 seasons. He was basketball All-State honorable mention in 1984-85 and scored 1,067 career points in Marathon boy’s basketball school history. Sonnentag was a starting men’s basketball player for UW-Milwaukee in 1985 and 1986 before transferring to UW-Stevens Point where he played for the Pointers in 1987 and 1988.

Gary Raether

Gary Raether was Marathon varsity head football coach from 1967 until 2001, coached Marathon football teams to six Marawood Conference championships, his 1973 football team was undefeated and ranked No. 1 Small School, he was awarded the 1994 NewsChannel 7 Coach of the Year, was inducted into the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2004, was Marathon track and field throws coach from 1967 until 2019, he coached 16 individual state champions and 93 conference champions in shot and disc and he was inducted into the Wisconsin Track Coaches Hall of Fame in 2018.

Bill Knetter

Bill Knetter served as Marathon varsity girls basketball coach from 1978-99 and 200-02, led the Red Raiders to four state tournament appearances, won the WIAA Division 3 state championship with an undefeated 26-0 record in the 1997-98 season, his 1986-87 girl’s team finished as Class C state runners-up, his teams won six Marawood Conference championships, he’s a nine-time winner of the Marawood Conference Coach of the Year, has 417 career coaching wins and was inducted into the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2003.

Claude Seubert

Claude Seubert earned first team all-Marawood Conference honors in football in 1975, baseball in 1976 and basketball in the 1974-75 and 1975 76 seasons, was awarded a NewsChannel 7 Basketball All-Star in the 1975-76 season, he played on Marathon boy’s basketball teams that were undefeated state champions in the 1974-75 and 1975 76 seasons, has coached in the school’s basketball program from 1984 until now, was an assistant coach for the Division 3 All-Star team in 2004, was an assistant coach for the 2010-11 Marathon boy’s basketball state championship team, was inducted into the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) in 2014, was WBCA assistant coach of the year in the 2016-17 season and he has over 500 career wins as a JV/freshman basketball coach.
