I am just giddy to attend my first high school sporting event this Thursday, Sept. 3, since I witnessed the Stratford boys basketball team’s sectional basketball win against Auburndale on March 12.
Almost six months later, I finally get to cover a high school sporting event for The Record-Review newspaper. It’s been a long wait, with the end of the winter sports season coming to a screeching halt and the entire spring sports season getting cancelled because of COVID-19.
This Thursday, Sept. 3, I’ll be covering the high school boys and girls cross country races at Frey Field in rural Spencer. Marathon is hosting the high school boy’s race at 4:30 p.m., high school girl’s race at 5:15 p.m., junior high school boy’s race at 6 p.m. and the junior high school girl’s race at 6:30 p.m. at Frey Farm on CTH C southwest of Stratford.
The Marathon Invite this Thursday in Spencer includes teams from Athens, Auburndale, Colby/Abby, Nekoosa and Phillips.
Marathon won’t be holding any home cross country meets at Nine Mile Recreation Area in Rib Mountain this fall. Instead, Marathon will also have home races at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 24, at the Baseman farm located on CTH S in Rib Falls north of STH 29 west of Marathon City. Other teams competing in the Marathon Quad will be Athens, Phillips and Prentice.
The Red Raiders are also hosting the Marawood Conference championship meet, consisting of all conference schools running, at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 15, at Frey Farm in rural Spencer.
Not everyone will be able to attend this fall’s sporting events, however. Curt Miller, Marathon middle and high school athletic director, told me today (Wednesday) the number of people allowed to attend cross country meets are at the discretion of the host school.
He said a limited number of tickets would be handed out to student athletes and coaches participating in cross country, football and volleyball sporting events this fall for their family and friends to attend. The Marathon High School and Marathon Venture Academy offices won’t be distributing or selling tickets for sporting events.
Miller said admission won’t be charged for fans to attend fall sporting events this year, but all fans must have a ticket to gain entry into them. He said anyone who does attend a fall sporting event must follow mask and social distancing mandates and school policies that are currently in place.
The Edgar and Stratford cross country teams begin their meet schedule with a race at 9:30 a.m. this Saturday, Sept. 5, at the Marshfield Columbus Invite, which will take place at Wildwood Zoo in Marshfield.
