Who was your favorite/best teacher when you were a student and why?

I have been fortunate to have many awesome teachers over the years. My third grade teacher was very memorable because she always made learning fun and integrated great projects like creating a class play and writing our own hardcover book. One of my college professors during my education program really challenged me to critically think about educational topics. It was one of my toughest classes, but I appreciated his efforts to ensure students were always achieving their highest level of learning.

Why did you choose this profession?

I chose the profession of teaching because I wanted the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others. I love that each school year is an exciting new beginning. Every child is unique and I believe in providing them with a safe and stimulating educational environment in which they can learn best. I enjoy the inspiration and enthusiasm that the profession brings each day.

What inspires you to continue as an educator?

The world of education is continually changing. I am inspired to continue to adapt and adjust educational practices in order to meet the needs of all students. The students and families that I work with every day inspire me to be a lifelong learner and make me excited about education. I am so grateful for the dedicated leadership within our school as well as the wonderful colleagues who are always working hard to build strong relationships with students and implement innovative practices within the virtual school setting.

What is your favorite memory as an educator?

I have so many favorite memories as an educator! Team teaching within a first through thirdgrade classroom was a very unique experience. I have really enjoyed moving into the virtual setting, and have many great memories of building relationships with students and families as well as closely collaborating with colleagues. I have many memories of students experiencing the “ah-ha” moment when they work so hard at something and are able to gain that understanding of a concept. Additionally, nothing is better than a student reaching out to you, sharing a thank you, or an update within their life.

In the Rural Virtual Academy, I teach 7th grade Language Arts and am the Student Services Coordinator for the RVA at the middle school level. This is my 12th year in education.
