Area volleyball teams see seasons come to an end in regionals
The Loyal volleyball team won its WIAA Division 4 quarterfinal match over Tri-County on Oct. 22, but then saw its season end two nights later with a 3-set loss to Prentice.
The Greyhounds controlled Tri-County to win in straight games, 25-16, 25-15 and 25-21. Remi Geiger had eight kills, Kayla Bremmer had five blocks, and Madi Zettler had 13 assists.
Katlyn Lindner contributed 24 digs and nine ace serves.
“Katlyn Lindner was spot-on again in the libero position, and the rest of our team was able to put it together,” said Loyal head coach Keli Geiger. “It was great to have a win on our home court for playoffs.”
Against third-seeded Prentice in an Oct. 24 regional semi-final, the task got tougher. Loyal dropped the match on scores of 25-19, 25-11 and 25-10 to see its season come to an end.
“I thought our back row passing was exceptional and should have set the tone of the game,” Coach Geiger said. “Unfortunately, the team that is going to come out on top is the team that’s going to put it together consistently for the longest period of time. So this was a tough loss for us tonight.”
Prentice went on to lose in the regional final to Wausau Newman on scores of 25-16, 25-20 and 25-17.
Greenwood also goes 1-1
The Greenwood volleyball team had a similar season end as it won its Division 4 quarterfinal match at Elmwood/ Plum City but lost two nights later at Chippewa Falls McDonell.
The Indians topped Elmwood/Plum City in four games, on scores of 25-18, 25-22, 21-25 and 26-24. Amanda Bogdonovich and Mesa Rasmussen had 11 kills apiece and Lexi Oestreich had 10. Celine Wuethrich led in assists with 27 and digs with 21 while Bogdonovich and Alana Artac each served three aces. “The girls displayed the whole spectrum of game demeanor starting out playing loose and confident the first two sets,” said Indian head coach Jenni Mayenschein. “The third set saw us playing tight and afraid of making mistakes. The fourth we started trying to do too much and getting out of position and then finally recovering to settle back down and play to our capabilities with a little grit and making a big comeback to secure the win. It was a great team win and made the long drive worth it.”
On Oct. 24, Greenwood traveled to McDonell and learned why the Macks were second-seeded in the 16team regional. McDonell ended Greenwood’s season on scores of 25-12, 25-8 and 25-13 and then went on to beat Eau Claire Immanuel in four games to advance to an Oct. 31 sectional semi-final against Clear Lake.
Spencer loses in first round
The Spencer volleyball team had one of the toughest tournament draws in Division 3 as it had to take on highly-ranked Stratford in an Oct. 22 regional quarterfi nal. Stratford won on game scores of 25-8, 25-17 and 25-15.Heavyn Kind had three kills and seven defensive digs for the Rockets.
Stratford is still going. The Tigers followed the win over Spencer with wins over Edgar and Auburndale and will play Fall Creek in an Oct. 31 Division 3 sectional semifinal.
