Dahl-Fuchs team takes 33rd Connor Scramble
LARRY CONNOR MEMORIAL GOLF SCRAMBLE
Notching scores of par or better on all 27 holes Saturday, Jordan Dahl and Dave Fuchs became first-time winners of the 33rd annual Larry Connor Memorial Golf Scramble held at Black River Golf Course.
Dahl and Fuchs teamed up to card a 12-under-par 96, three shots ahead of Bill and Jack Connor, annual teammates in this tourney who earned their highest placement since winning it back in 2002. The Connors were secondfl ight winners two years ago.
Bob and Chris Connor placed third with a 3-under-par score of 105.
Bill, Jack, Bob and Chris are nephews of Larry Connor, who was an avid golfer and a teacher and boys basketball coach at Medford Area Senior High. He competed statewide and nationwide in the Amputee Golf Association before passing away at age 45 in 1988.
A total of 27 two-man teams competed in this year’s tournament. Seven teams were placed in the championship, first and second flights after the first round of nine holes. Six more teams landed in the third flight.
Dahl and Vince Wojcik finished second three years ago and won last year’s third flight. Dahl and Fuchs started strong Saturday and stayed consistent throughout the day to win the 2020 event. They led the pack after nine holes with a 5-under-par 31, highlighted by an eagle on the par-5, 501-yard fifth hole and birdies on the par-4 first, fourth and eighth holes.
Bill and Jack Connor and Gary Graham and Ed Mohr were one shot behind after nine holes.
A 32 on the second nine gave Dahl and Fuchs a three-stroke lead over Bill and Jack Connor and a comfortable sixshot lead over two other teams going into the last nine holes. Dahl and Fuchs eagled the par-four eighth hole in the second round. Fuchs and Dahl and Bill and Jack Connor both shot 33s in the final round.
Graham and Mohr finished fourth in the championship flight with a 106, Bill Klinner and Jim Nayes and the team of Jason Christianson and Jesse Kreiner both finished with 107s and Rom Moscoso and Ben Gorichs shot a 108.
After winning the overall championship the past two years, Pete Liske and Tim Rau settled for the first flight title Saturday with a 27-hole score of 99. They were among eight teams that closed the first round with 35s, but only four of those teams survived the tie-breaking process and advanced to the championship flight. From there, Liske and Rau had solid rounds of 33 and 31 to easily secure the flight championship ahead of tournament veterans Ryan Waldhart and Troy Schroeder (105). Tony Kleifgen and Dave Pepper were third with their 106.
Trevor Dahl and Aaron Gilles shot a 105, highlighted by a closing round of 32, to win the second flight by three shots over Marshall Kleist and Chuck Schultz. Dan and Zach Boxx won the tiebreaker to claim third at 111 over Dwayne and Josh Boxx.
Mike Brandner and Jesse Clark carded a 114 to win the third flight by two shots over the teams of Brian Smola and Jeff Miller and Zak Rau and Sam Kleutsch.
Proceeds from the 2019 tournament were used to place a new flag pole at Black River Golf Course. The
34th annual tournament is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 14, 2021.
