James “Jim” E. Slocum James “Jim” E. Slocum

1958-2020

James “Jim” Edward Slocum died unexpectedly on May 28, 2020 in St Paul, Minn., where he resided with his wife, Sherry (Duesing) Slocum of 38 years. They had two amazing children, Alex (Natalie) and Ryann Check (Elliott); and four wonderful grandkids, Rose Slocum, Trey, Blake and Eli Check that he adored. Jim and Sherry moved to Minnesota in 1978, where he repaired musical instruments for Schmitt Music and played in a band while going to school to be a computer programmer. They moved to Hastings, Minn. in 1989, where he worked at Regina Medical Center. They then moved to St Paul, Minn., where he worked as a customer service supervisor at the UPS Store on Grand Ave. They loved to take walks and loved their “staycations” in St Paul.

James is survived by his sisters, Susan (Ron) Ofstehage and Claire Slocum; sister-in-law, Jacky Slocum. Also, Lance (Mary) Duesing, Nancy (Joe) Wojcik, Rick (Bev) Duesing, Jim (Lynn) Duesing, Sheila Duesing (Phil); and brother-in-law, Tom Wittek. He had many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews that thought the world of Jim. “He was the best hugger,” is what many have said about him.

Jim was proceeded in death by his parents, Kay and Darwin Slocum; brother, Frank Slocum; sisterin- law, Heidi (Beverly) Duesing-Wittek; and mother and father-in-law, Jerry and Betty Duesing. Like Betty once said, they broke the mold when they made Jim Slocum, and they truly did.

Jim truly loved his family, friends, music and the Minnesota Vikings. He will be dearly missed by anyone who knew him.

Due to the circumstances, we will have a service at a later date.
