Taylor County Moving for a Cure continues to help cancer patients

“It’s not what we planned, but we’re still excited to offer Taylor County residents experiencing cancer treatments with some financial relief during these diffi cult times,” said Carmen Thiede, Committee Chair. “Fundraising totals are less than prior years due to the absence of team fundraising and event activities, but overall, we are pleased with results considering the circumstances.”

The fifth annual Taylor County Moving for a Cure event was scheduled for Friday evening, May 15, at the Medford City Park. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic and safer-at-home restrictions, the committee made the decision in early May to cancel this year’s event. However, with the continued support of local business sponsorships and raffle ticket donations, stipends will still be offered to qualified applicants starting June 1 until funds are depleted.

“We had to adjust our method of selling raffle tickets from local business placement to online sales because of closures. Businesses that normally partner with us and help with selling raffle tickets were closed leading up to our event. Therefore, we made some adjustments this year and made our raffle tickets available online thru our website TCMoving4Cure.com to support our fundraising. Response was well received from the community and online sales will continue as one method of selling raffle tickets in future years,” Thiede said.

The committee partners with the Taylor County Health Department to disburse monies raised. Those seeking assistance must complete a simple grant application with the requirement that they must have lived in Taylor County for at least one year (since May 2019), are currently receiving cancer treatment from a licensed/certified oncologist, and provide a letter from their oncologist stating they are or have received treatment since May 2019. Applications will be available beginning June 1 on their website or from the Taylor County Health Department. Priority will be given to first-time recipients.

The committee thanks all of this year’s business sponsors, in particular our Gold Sponsors of AbbyLand Foods, Aspirus Medford Hospital & Clinic, Gilman Cheese Corporation, K99/WIGM Radio, Lakeside Financial, Medford Lions, Nestle Pizza, Nicolet National Bank, and Sierra Pacific Foundation. Without these businesses our success could not be achieved.

Individuals wanting to donate during the year may do so by contacting a committee member on the TCMoving4cure.com website. Any monies collected throughout the year are maintained until the next year’s event and included in that year’s allocations.

Next year’s event will be Friday evening, May 14, 2021.
