Highground to host June 6 open house, meet-and-greet

The Highground Veterans Memorial Park will be hosting an open house for veterans organizations and an executive director meet-and-greet on June 6, from 9 a.m. to noon.

“We look forward to welcoming individuals from the veterans service organizations to The Highground—to share information about the mission-based programs we support, and learn more about their organizations and offerings,” said event coordinator Meranda Lelonek. “This will help us to create a stronger referral network and increase awareness for The Highground across Wisconsin.”

The Highground will also be introducing executive director Chris Pettis to the community. Pettis, who recently joined The Highground team, is a Marine veteran who served at numerous bases stateside and was deployed to Somalia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Kuwait and Iraq.

Gary Weirauch, vice chair of The Highground board of directors, said, “Chris’s natural leadership qualities really impressed us during the interview process. We also learned that PTSD has personally impacted Chris’s life which we strongly feel will give him the ability to relate to our veterans.”

This event is open to the public. Highground staff and volunteers will be on hand to offer tours of the park, share information about future events, and learn more about the veterans organizations.

Interested parties are invited to call 715-743-4224 to RSVP or to ask questions about the open house The Highground is also hosting a golf outing on June 5 at the Neillsville Country Club.

“The Highground team is happy to be planning our first warm weather event after having to cancel several events due to the coronavirus pandemic,” Lelonek said.

This fundraiser will help support veterans programs and the park’s mission to “Honor, Educate, and Heal.” It will feature a 9-hole golf scramble, lunch, wingspan raffles, hole games and prizes.
