ALL-MARAWOOD NORTH GIRLS BASKETBALL

The two senior veterans of Rib Lake’s girls basketball team closed their careers by receiving honorable mention in the voting for this year’s All-Marawood North squads.

Savana Radtke and Mackenzie Weinzatl, who were key parts of the varsity rotation this year and last earned the awards following a challenging season for the Lady Redmen that ended with a 3-20 overall record and a 2-14 record in Marawood Conference games.

It’s the first All-Marawood award for both players in basketball.

Radtke, listed as a 5-7 forward, led the Redmen by averaging 6.5 points while playing in all 23 games. Radtke also led the team and ranked second in the conference in rebounds, averaging 8.0 per game, and she added 26 steals for an average of 1.1 per game.

Radtke set a season high of 14 points in a 51-24 loss to Marathon on Dec. 2. She hit double figures a total of six times, including a 12-point outing in Rib Lake’s last win of the season, a 44-42 Marawood North win over Abbotsford on Feb. 20. She had six points and a season-high 15 rebounds in the team’s first win of the year, a 39-36 victory at Abbotsford Jan. 7.

Radtke had an 11-point, 12-rebound double-double in a 43-41 home loss to Chequamegon on Nov. 21 in the team’s second game of the season. She opened the season with games of 10, 12 and 11 rebounds in season-opening defeats to Columbus Catholic, Chequamegon and Prentice. She had a couple of near misses for doubleheaders in mid-season, getting eight points and 11 rebounds in a 68-16 loss to Prentice Jan. 21 and 10 points and eight rebounds in a 55-22 loss to Auburndale Jan. 24.

Weinzatl, a 5-8 forward, averaged 5.4 points in 21 games and averaged 5.1 rebounds per game. She was the team’s third-leading scorer behind Nellie Hopkins’ 6.3 points per game and its secondleading rebounder behind Radtke.

Weinzatl did some of her biggest damage against Marawood North rivals.

She had 10 points and seven rebounds in the Nov. 21 loss to Chequamegon and 11 points and seven rebounds in the 49-31 loss at Prentice Nov. 26. She had 13 points and six boards in a 46-26 loss to Athens Dec. 13 and 13 points and eight rebounds in the first win over Abbotsford. She had a season-high 11 rebounds along with five points, three steals, two assists and a blocked shot in the second win over Abbotsford.

Weinzatl led Rib Lake with six blocked shots during the year.

This year’s All-Marawood North team is a unanimously-selected quintet by the league’s coaching staffs. It consists of seniors Kaelyn Isaacson and McKenna Isaacson from Prentice and Paula Lira of Athens along with junior Rachel Callow and the Player of the Year, sophomore Jada Eggebrecht, of Phillips. Eggebrecht averaged nearly 23 points and over four assists per game this season, while Kaelyn Isaacson put up nearly 21 points per game.

Eggebrecht made the honorable mention list for the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association’s Division 4 All-State team.

Mike Eggebrecht of Phillips was named Coach of the Year after leading the league-champion Loggers to a 12-4 re- cord in Marawood games and a 17-7 mark overall. The Loggers lost to Colfax Feb. 29 in a WIAA Division 4 regional final. Losses by Phillips and Prentice in the regional final round ended the year for the Marawood North.

Rib Lake will look for its young talent to improve and hopefully stay healthier in 2020-21 after graduating four seniors this year. Hopkins and Jolee Gehrke were the only juniors on this year’s team, so next season’s group will still be a relatively young one.
