The 3-D option was hit with local archers, who earned many of its top awards during Medford’s annual National Archery in the Schools Program shoot held at Medford Area Middle School March 6-7.
Medford freshman Landen Viergutz won the high school boys championship, while Gilman senior Hunter Oberle was the high school girls champion among the 161 3-D archers, which included 98 boys and 63 girls. Viergutz capped a big day in both of the day’s tournaments with a score of 290 out of 300 in the 3-D shoot that beat Elk Mound’s Mitchell Ruppelt by a point to win the overall championship. Oberle earned a 288 to win the high school girls title by a point over Elk Mound’s Carley Gehrke.
Additionally among high schoolers, Gilman’s Wayne McAlpine was third overall in the boys competition and second among freshmen with his score of 285, while Kylee Burton was the top-scoring junior and ranked third overall among high school girls with her score of 282. Freshman Casey Grunseth was fourth for boys at 281. Medford freshman Kirsten Weix was the second-ranked freshman girl and was fourth overall with her 281.
Medford seventh grader Kyanna Mallien won the middle school girls championship with a 270, while her teammate Tana Rappe was third overall and second in the grade with a 264. Jenna Wickersheim was seventh overall and second among eighth graders with a 261.
Fifth grader Nathaniel White earned his second individual title of the weekend with a 260 that topped the elementary boys division, while Brody Peche was third with a 240. Bristal Kraemer was second out of 12 elementary girls with a 248.
Sixth grader Jaxson Franz led four Rib Lake shooters with a 235.
Gilman (1,677 points) beat Cornell (1,575) and Augusta (1,509) to win the high school team championship. Medford’s fifth grade team won the elementary team championship with 1,433 points. Stratford won the middle school division with 1,578 points, followed by Medford I (1,562), Medford II (1,559) and Gilman (1,512).
