The cookie thief The cookie thief

As the parents of a teenaged boy my wife and I are used to finding our cupboards emptied of snacks and food to fuel Alex’s seemingly never-ending growth spurt.

Like many parents, we have resorted to the tried and true practice of hiding or disguising items that we do not want devoured — in this context it is not weird at all that we have had the same bag of frozen peas in our freezer for the past decade. As a side benefit, hiding treats also means we are less likely to munch on them ourselves.

My wife, like many people, has an addiction to Girl Scout cookies, specifically when it comes to Thin Mints.

With our daughter aged out of the active sale of Girl Scout cookies, Kim had to switch to a different dealer to get her fix and has been surreptitiously buying boxes of them from several different Scouts and bringing them home a box or two at a time hoping that Alex or I don’t see them.

What she didn’t count on is having to guard them against Beth. Since Beth is usually more than an hour drive away in Stevens Point, this would seem not to be hard to do.

Unfortunately for my wife’s cookie habit, Beth was in Medford over the weekend competing in the 14th annual Alumni Bonspiel.

She headed back to school with her teammate on Sunday night and judging from the discussion on my family chat group this morning, we should have paid more attention to what she was taking back with her.

Kim You have my box of Thin Mints in your backpack Beth I do. Yes. It’s mine now.

Beth

Um . . . Bring them back!

*For those who are over 40 and don’t speak emoji, this is a shrug which translates as a passive aggressive “I don’t care.”

I don’t make the rules. . . . I didn’t order any because I forgot that I like them Beth

Ummmmm . . . NOT how that works!

Kim

I don’t make the rules Beth

ng tim After seeing this go back and forth for some time, I jumped into the conversation and threatened to let the world know that Beth was a cookie thief.

Rather than her being contrite and agreeing to return the cookies when she comes home for Spring Break this weekend or to offer to pay for a new box (highly unlikely since we had to give her gas money to go back to school), Beth instead doubled down.

Beth

I’m keeping them.

Beth
