JREC providing 2020 member scholarships

A variety of scholarships are now available to active members, and dependent students of active members of Jump River Electric Cooperative (JREC). The JREC board of directors increased the 2020 scholarship award amounts, as giving back to the community is one of their cooperative principles, while furthering the education of their members and their youth is another. “The cooperative is proud to be able to help our members and their students meet their educational goals, and we know scholarships are an important part of making that happen,” said JREC general manager/CEO Jim Anderson.

This year, the cooperative will offer scholarships to high school seniors and non-traditional students who will attend a post-secondary college during the upcoming 2020-21 school year.

Graduating seniors whose parent(s) or legal guardian(s) are active members of JREC, and are attending one of the following high schools, can apply for a $500 scholarship by contacting the guidance counselor. Applicable schools are Lake Holcombe, Flambeau, Bruce, Ladysmith, Chetek-Weyerhaeuser, Gilman, Stanley-Boyd, Rib Lake, LCO and Hayward.

The $800 JREC-John Hirschfeld Jr. Memorial Lineworker Scholarship is available to active members or their dependent students who attend a one-year electric power distribution/ lineworker post-secondary school program. Graduating seniors applying must attend one of the 10 schools listed above, or the Winter High School.

Along with the lineworker scholarship, there is another scholarship opportunity for non-traditional students attending a post-secondary college. The first is the JREC-Allen Beadles Memorial Scholarship, with two, $500 scholarships awarded.

The JREC scholarship program is funded entirely from the Federated Youth Foundation (FYF), which receives its money through unclaimed capital credits. The FYF is also accepting applications for the Charles Van Sickle Scholarship. The $2,000 scholarship will be awarded to a pre-law or law student who has an interest in pursuing cooperative law.

This scholarship is made possible by an endowment established in 2013, to honor Wisconsin’s renowned electric cooperative lobbyist and attorney, the late Charles Van Sickle. It will be awarded during the spring 2020 semester.
