Wolfpack has season end at Regional competition
The Cornell-Gilman Wolfpack Wrestlers looked to move through the brackets at Regionals action in Cadott, Feb. 15, but ran into some tough competition.
“Definitely not what we were hoping for results on Saturday,” said coach Greg Sonnentag. “We knew going in, that our Regional was going to be very tough and the kids would perhaps have to beat someone who was ranked higher than them to move on. Sadly, we couldn’t pull that off.”
Senior Ethan Person (113 pounds) received a bye the first round, then faced off against Cadott’s Logan Harel in the second round. Person lost that bout, then ended up facing Harel in the second place match to see who would qualify to reach Sectionals.
Unfortunately, Person saw his high school wrestling career come to an end, as he walked away with a third place finish.
Senior Andrew Olson (285) also ended his career, after first winning in the first round over Marathon’s Cameron Blount in 3:16. Olson lost to Cadott’s Josh Briggs in the second round, then fell in the third place match-up to Austin Miller of Edgar.
Julian Krizan, 160-pound junior, received a bye in the first round, then lost to former teammate Spencer Kraus of Athens, in the second round. Krizan couldn’t best his Cadott opponent Michael Pecha in the third place match, falling in 1:14.
Freshman Braeden Person (138) also saw his season come to an end. After a bye in the first round, B. Person lost to Stratford’s Elijah Lucio by a 16-0 technical fall. Person then fell to Jared Sweno from Marathon, in the third place bout.
“Overall, I am proud of these kids,” said Sonnentag, “and their work and dedication throughout the season.”
