WFCA ALL-STAR GAME SELECTIONS

Medford’s Ean Wilson was named to the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association’s All-Star Game roster last week, becoming the first Raider chosen to play in the event since Joel Rausch in 2014.

Wilson won’t be alone as his father, Medford head coach Ted Wilson, is a member of the coaching staff for the North Large School squad, which will play the South All-Stars at 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 18 at Titan Stadium on the campus of UW-Oshkosh.

The Large School game will be the third game of the day. The Eight-Player All-Star Game starts at 10 a.m., followed by the Small School game at 1:30 p.m.

Ted Wilson joins an eight-member coaching staff that will be led by Marshfi eld’s Dennis Goettl. The assistants are Wilson, Randy Hartwig and Ryan Brandt of Marshfield, Steve Jung and Nick Braemer of Neenah, Dan Barutha of Lakeland and Matt Hintz of Hortonville.

Wilson oversaw one of the best seasons in school history in 2019 as the Raiders went 11-1 overall, including a 6-0 record in the Great Northern Conference and WIAA Division 3 playoff wins over Hayward (53-0) and River Falls (16-14). In 14 seasons, Wilson’s teams have compiled a record of 76-66, including a 46-24 mark in the Great Northern Conference. In 12 GNC seasons, Wilson’s teams have won or shared five conference titles. He is a three-time GNC Coach of the Year, including this past season.

The Raiders have an 8-10 post-season mark under Wilson, including three trips to Level 3 in the Division 3 playoffs.

Ean Wilson played a large role in Medford’s record-setting season. He fills an inside linebacker spot on the North All-Star team. In 2019, Wilson was credited with 65 total tackles in 12 game, including 27 solo stops. He had five tackles for loss, two sacks, a fumble recovery and a forced fumble.

He joins Caleb Obermann of Kimberly, Marc Sippel of Wausau West and Steven Lazaris of Hartford as the North’s inside linebackers.

Wilson was a unanimous first-team All-GNC pick and an All-Region selection this season on both defense and offense. At running back, he earned honorable mention for the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association’s Large School All-State team.

Wilson re-wrote most of the rushing section of Medford’s record book. He finished 2019 with a single-season record of 2,183 yards that smashed the 1992 record held by Stan Strama (1,931) and a career rushing record of 4,285 yards that beat the previous mark held by 2007 Medford graduate Cole Garczynski (3,127). He scored 29 rushing touchdowns and was three carries shy of a state record when he had 57 attempts for 311 yards in a win over Mosinee.

Wilson’s 192.3 rushing yards per game in league play, easily led the GNC. His 354 total attempts smashed the 2008 school record of 289 set by Trevor Laher.

Ted Wilson played football at UWOshkosh and Ean recently decided that’s where he will also attend school.

Other Raiders to play in the game in the last decade or so include Rausch in 2014, Cole Loertscher and Ben Hemer in 2013, Terrin Meyer in 2012, Brent Stiglich in 2011 and Ethan Hemer in 2009.
