Greyhound girls handle Spencer

One successful strategy for winning basketball games is to not allow the opposing team to score for the first eight minutes of a game. It worked for Loyal, anyway, as it built a 20-0 lead at home against Spencer on Feb. 6 and rolled from there to a 62-43 Eastern Cloverbelt Conference victory. With the Rockets unable to get anything to fall through the net, Loyal established an early 14-0 that swelled to 20 points on back-to-back 3-pointers by Bailey Bravener. Jorie Meyer finally got Spencer on the scoreboard with 9:36 left in the first half. The Rockets were able to keep it even from there, and trailed 37-18 at the break.

Loyal hit 47 percent (13-30) of its shots in the game and was 7-13 on 3-pointers and 15-24 at the free-throw line.

The slow start kept Spencer at a 29 percent (12-41) shooting clip for the game. The Rockets were 3-10 on 3-point attempts and 10-19 on free throws.

Savannah Schley led Loyal with 14 points, Bravener scored 12, and Katlyn Lindner and Remi Geiger each had nine. Schley was 7-8 at the freethrow line. Aryiah Schuh scored 14 points for Spencer with a pair of 3-pointers and a 6-8 night at the line. Meyer and Heavyn Kind each added eight points.

Greenwood girls win twice

The Greenwood girls basketball team defeated Spencer 52-36 at home on Feb. 4 to earn its second Eastern Cloverbelt Conference win of the season. Olivia Klabon poured in 18 points to lead the Indians, while Maddi Raese scored 10, Celine Wuethrich scored eight and Amanda Bogdonovich added seven.

Two nights later, Greenwood won its second straight,winning at Cornell by a 64-32 score. No individual numbers were available for that game
