Drywood Tavern in rural Cadott, has a new look, with a new interior and a new owner, as Lyle Goettl takes over the long-established bar. Goettl is no stranger to the bar business, as he operated the Crescent Tavern some years ago.

20 Years Ago – 2000

Smokin’ Joe’s in Holcombe, hosts a snowmobile race, with the course circumventing most of the adjoining lake, in the “Northwoods Challenge.” Resort general manager Chris Melbinger expects 400-600 people for the event and says the entry/ admission fees will be used to maintain local snowmobile trails.

30 Years Ago – 1990 The Cadott School District receives a $1,000 Alcohol and Drug Grant from the Department of Instruction. The grants are awarded to support prevention projects created and implemented by youth.

40 Years Ago – 1980

Charles Leider, Cornell postmaster, reports the postal service will begin circulating the recently implemented Susan B. Anthony silver dollar in an effort to promote the coin. However, customers can request dollar bills as change, instead of the “hard cash.”

50 Years Ago – 1970

The Soo Line Railroad has a 14-car derailment just east of Cadott, in an early morning incident that tears up a one-mile stretch of track. No injuries occurred in the twisted mass of cars, but rail officials have no leads on what caused the derailment or the cost of damages.

60 Years Ago – 1960

Badger Sewing Center, operated by Rudolph Siebel, opens at the corner of First and Main streets in Cornell. The business features an outlet for new and used sewing machines, as well as offering service work.

100 Years Ago – 1920

With heavy snowstorms, resulting in bad public highway conditions, a basketball game at Cornell’s Lyric Theatre is postponed, but people should keep their tickets for a make-up game to be scheduled in the future.
