Athens Acres

The Athens Acres 4-H Club met on Jan. 21 in the Athens HIgh School music room.

Pledges were said and roll call was taken with 41 members present. The secretary minutes and treasury reports were approved as read. January birthdays were Anna Nowicki, Samantha Held, Abby VanRixel, Egan Bingham and Vanessa Dalbec.

The only committee report was given by the Cloverbuds. They potted plants from cuttings and made treats for the birds with bagels, peanut butter and birdseed.

Old business was reviewed. The club donated 12 dozen cookies to the Salvation Army for Christmas, overdue fees were taken care of and the upcoming candy bar sale was discussed.

Under new business, the club will help at the Blue Ribbon dinner and put together a basket for the auction. The club is planning an Easter Egg hunt this year in the community, more details will be at the February meeting. Carley Lipinski and McKale Redmann each received $50 for the club scholarship. Cloverbud Craft Day will be at the end of March. The club will be getting three projects ready for the fair.

After the next meeting, club members will be making Valentines for Veterans. The club met in the commons after the meeting and tied 23 blankets for the Family House in Wausau. The Ha-Ha-Box winner was Jack Bornbach.

The club’s next meeting will be on Tuesday, Feb. 18, at 7 p.m. in the Athens High School music room.

Military supper

A Military Appreciation supper will be hosted by the Wien Wildcats 4-H at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 9, at Edgar High School. Current and former military service members and a guest are invited. People planning on attending the supper need to RSVP by Feb. 3 to 715897-5354.

Weaving initiative

All ages of people can participate in a community-wide weaving project happening now through March 19 at the Marathon County Public Library’s Athens Branch, located at 221 Caroline St.

People can add to this ever evolving project using yarn and other textile materials any timne the branch is open. People wanting more information on this community initiative can call the Athens library at 715-257-7292.

Senior Citizens

The Senior Citizens card group met on Jan. 23 for weekly card playing at the Athens Area Fire and Ambulance Hall.

Two games of Sheepshead were played. Butch Boris won the first game and Sally Whaples took second place. Pat Frank won the second game and Jan Lake placed second. David Perrodin received low score.

The Senior Citizens card group will play cards again at 1 p.m. on this Thursday, Jan. 30, at the Athens Area Fire and Ambulance Hall.

Play and Learn

Parents and their young children are welcome to attend Play and Learn at 10:30 a.m. each Tuesday until May 26 at the Marathon County Athens Branch Library.

Weekly knitting

Adults can practice their knitting, crocheting and more on a weekly basis with new sessions of Needle Arts afternoons from 1-4 p.m. each Tuesday until May 26 at the Marathon County Public Library’s Athens Branch, located at 221 Caroline Street.

Book Club

The public is welcome to join the monthly book club discussion the Marathon County Athens Branch Library at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 13. This month’s book is titled, “Professor Chandra Follows His Bliss.”
