MEDFORD BOYS TENNIS

While continuing to mix-and-match lineups in the early going, the Medford boys tennis team got its third win of the season and was shut out by the host Railroaders in Thursday’s quad.

The Raiders got two singles and two doubles wins to get past Viroqua 4-3 and lost 7-0 to Altoona. Rainy weather forced play to move indoors at the Menard Tennis Center, but there was not enough reserved time at that facility for Medford and Black River Falls to complete their dual meet, which is now scheduled for May 9 at Black River Falls.

In the Viroqua meets, Ethan Jones and Axl Spanbauer earned the key singles wins. Playing at flight three, Jones, a freshman, defeated Ozzie Brodhead 6-3, 6-1. Spanbauer, a sophomore, also won in straight sets in flight four, beating Seamus Garrity 6-0, 6-2.

Cole Zenner and Cash Thums teamed up to win the flight-two doubles match 64, 6-4 over the Blackhawks’ Isaac Fouts and Zyon Benson. Sophomores Ethan Kollmansberger and Chrisitan Preuss were dominant in flight three, taking care of Nathan Walters and Finn Palen 6-1, 6-2.

Owen King and Levi King defeated Medford’s Cale Schulz and Blaine Searles 6-1, 6-4 in flight-one doubles.

Viroqua’s Cedar Semanchen won a good number-two singles match with Raider Jaeden Brandner with the second set going to a tiebreaker. Semanchen won 6-4, 7-6 (4). Soren Declerq beat Medford’s Mason Reimann 6-0, 6-1 in the numberone singles match.

All seven of Altoona’s wins were in straight sets. With a 3-0 day, the Railroaders improved to 6-0 and haven’t lost a match so far this season.

In singles from flights one to four, Trenton Navarre beat Schulz 6-1, 6-0; Carter Drescher beat Kollmansberger 6-0, 6-1; Connor Gower beat Thums 6-0, 6-0 and Jonah Oldenkamp defeated Jones 60, 6-0.

In doubles from flights one through three, Tegan Bennett and Jaxton Semrow beat Reimann and Searles 6-1, 6-0; Daylen Parks and Isaiah Yi beat Brandner and Zenner 6-0, 6-1 and Lucas Pederson and Joseph Ricci beat Preuss and Spanbauer 6-0, 6-0.

Medford, now 3-8, hosts Stevens Point Pacelli today, Thursday, in a Great Northern Conference dual meet that starts at 5 p.m. The Raiders host Ashland Tuesday in another 5 p.m. GNC meet. Medford goes to Eau Claire Regis May 1 for a 4 p.m. non-conference meet.
