R EPORTS Hit and run

On March 31, at 7:45 p.m., a vehicle operated by Logan Becker, 37, of Owen, was traveling westbound on CTH A and struck a horse and buggy operated by Roy Borntreger, 46, of Medford. According to the crash report, Becker fled the scene prior to law enforcement arrival. Becker was cited for failure of operator to notify policy of an accident, inattentive driving and hit and run. Becker’s vehicle sustained functional damage and the buggy sustained disabling damage.

One vehicle crashes

On March 30, at 8:20 p.m., a vehicle operated by Emilia Reid, 18, of Stanley, was traveling southbound on Hwy 73 in the town of Cleveland, and lost control of the vehicle and entered the west ditch. The vehicle continued southbound into the west ditch and crossed over a driveway. The vehicle sustained disabling damage.

On March 30, at 6 p.m., a vehicle operated by Stephen Jones, 67, of Rib Lake, was driving northbound on Hwy 13 in the town of Medford when it drove into a patch of slush causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle. The vehicle veered left and continued across the southbound lane of traffic and into the west ditch of Hwy 13.The vehicle then continued until it struck a tree causing disabling damage to the front end of the vehicle.

On March 30, at 9:05 a.m., a vehicle operated by Silas Bolles, 21, of Catawba, was traveling northbound on Hwy 13 in the town of Westboro, when the driver observed smoke coming from underneath the hood. Bolles pulled onto the east shoulder of Hwy 13. The driver and passenger exited the vehicle. Westboro fire responded and put out the fire. The vehicle was towed from the scene with disabling damage.

On March 29, at 11:10 a.m., a vehicle operated by Linda Hartl, 64, of Medford, was traveling west on Allman Ave. in the town of Medford. The vehicle drove off the roadway on the right side. It hit a mailbox owned by Tami Fuchs at W6218 Allman Ave. and continued west a short distance before coming to a stop. According to the crash report, the driver was not injured, was wearing her seatbelt and at the time of the crash was going approximately 30 mph in a 35 mph zone. The driver stated she called AAA for a tow. The vehicle had minor damage to the right front corner. The driver state she got over a little too far for the vehicles that were parked on the opposite side facing east. The responding officer observed numerous vehicle on the shoulder.

On March 23, at 4:24 p.m., a vehicle operated by Nathan Smith, 37, of Conrath, was eastbound on CTH M in the town of Pershing, traveling at about 50 mph. The vehicle hit a patch of ice and fishtailed down CTH M. The vehicle traveled sideways down CTH M when it entered the south ditch and flipped onto the passenger side. The vehicle was towed due to disabling damage. A front seat passenger, Janel Smith, 39, of Conrath, was ejected through the side window and was transported by ambulance to Aspirus Stanley Hospital. A nine-year-old passenger in the second row was also transported by ambulance to Aspirus Stanley Hospital with suspected minor injuries. A seven-year-old passenger in the second row was also transported by ambulance to Aspirus Stanley Hospital with possible injury. Nathan Smith was cited for operating a without a valid license because of expiration and for operating a motor vehicle without insurance.

Two vehicle crashes

On March 29, at 12:16 p.m., a vehicle operated by Joel Ratz, 40, of Eleva, was sitting on CTH E at the stop sign at the intersection with CTH A in the town of Little Black. Ratz observed a vehicle come from the west and pass him on CTH A. Ratz then looked to the east and pulled away from the stop sign traveling north on CTH E and colliding with a vehicle operated by Fawn Wallace Szydel, 40, of Curtiss, that was traveling eastbound on CTH A. According to the crash report, Ratz said he never saw the second vehicle coming. Wallace Szydel said she had her cruise set at 60 mph and she observed Ratz begin to enter the intersection. Wallace Szydel blew the horn and slammed on the brakes in an attempt to avoid a collision. The vehicles collided in the intersection. Ratz came to rest facing east in the eastbound lane of CTH A. Wallace Szydel came to rest facing northeast in the intersection, resting against a guard rail. Both vehicles were towed due to disabling damage. Wallace Szydel was transported by ambulance to Aspirus Medford Hospital and Clinics with suspected serious injuries. Her passengers, Thomas Coppens, 66, of Menominee, Mich., was transported by ambulance with suspected minor injuries; Maggie Mae Wallace Szydel, 14, of Curtiss, was transported to Aspirus Medford Hospital with suspected minor injuries; and Cindy Coppens, 60, of Menominee, Mich., was transported by ambulance to Aspirus Medford Hospital with suspected injuries. Ratz was cited for failure to yield right of way from a stop sign.

On March 27, a vehicle operated by Rodney Mahner, 60, of Medford, was westbound on Quarter Lane in the town of Chelsea traveling at approximately 35 mph. Mahner traveled over a hill and could not see due to the sun. Mahner saw a vehicle owned by Randall Niesman of Westboro on the north side of Quarter Lane but not the trailer behind it. Niesman’s vehicle was parked on the north side of Quarter Lane. Mahner swerved to avoid hitting the trailer and struck the left corner of the trailer and scraped up against the Niesman vehicle and stopped up the roadway. A woman identified as Melody Niesman, 57, of Westboro, was in the trailer when it was struck. Melody Niesman was transported by ambulance to Aspirus Medford Hospital with suspected serious injuries. Both vehicles sustained functional damage.

Deer related

On April 3, at 8 p.m., a vehicle operated by Russell Bullis, 73, of Rib Lake, struck a deer while northbound on CTH C in the town of Greenwood. The vehicle sustained functional damage.

On March 27, at 8:37 p.m., a vehicle operated by Irvin Roeske, 68, of Phillips, struck a deer while northbound on Hwy 13 in the town of Deer Creek. The vehicle sustained functional damage.
