Greenwood library hosting beginner crochet class
The Greenwood Area Library, 102 N. Main St., will soon be the host site of a beginner crochet class. The class will be taught by Pat Bell.
“If you have no experience in crocheting but would like to learn, this class is for you. Or maybe you are someone who has tried, maybe years ago but you really don’t understand or don’t remember how it's done – yes, this class is for you,” Bell wrote in a press release.
The class will be held over four sessions: Thursdays, May 1, 8, 15, and 22, from 4-6 p.m. each time.
Class project and overview You will be crocheting a table runner of at least two colors. Also, the class will go over good posture when you are crocheting so you don’t hurt or tire out your hands, arms, neck, or shoulders.
Items needed: 1. Hooks: anywhere from a 4mm to a 5mm (hence a: 4mm, 4.25mm, 4.5mm, or a 5mm). Bell recommends you bring two different size hooks, something like a 4.25mm and a 5mm, or 4mm and a 4.5mm, etc.
2. One sewing needle (has a sharp end and is metal, not plastic) with a very large eye. You will be using this needle to weave in ends. NOTE: NO plastic crochet needle.
3. Scissors 4. Pencil and paper (for note taking), and a small hand calculator.
5. Two colors (minimum) of worsted “acrylic” yarn (NO bulky/large/heavy weight yarn, NO black yarn or any dark colored yarn, and NO cotton yarn). You will need a minimum of two (2) skeins; hence approximately 1,0251,225 yards of acrylic yarn. Again, if you would like to have more than two colors that would be great! You will be learning how to change colors in this project.
You will also learn: how to crochet a “chain” (all crocheting is based off of a chain); single crochet; how to calculate the desired length of the runner, hence, determining the count for your chain; and how to weave in the ends so you can’t see them and they won’t come out. Plus, you will learn to single crochet all the way around your piece and then add a simple but decorative edge.
“You will be creating your own design. There will be no predetermined pattern used. You are the creator; you are the designer,” Bell wrote.
Note that finishing this project by the end of this class, May 22, is based off of you doing “homework,” i.e., working on your project outside of class.
There is no cost to attend but registration is required, as space is limited. Call the library at 715-267-7103 to register.
