In the first outing of the season, the Cadott softball program hosted the Cornell-Lake Holcombe Knights, April 4, in what turned out to be a mud fest.

“I’m proud of how Friday’s game went, considering we had nine girls for that game,” said Cadott coach Lexie Rothbauer. “Both innings, our bats came alive after two outs, which is always fun to have that much excitement, with two outs.”

On the pitcher’s mound, Knights senior Candice Spaeth was knocked out in the first inning, as sloppy conditions led to some runs walked in. Senior Izzy Schwingle then took over for the remainder of the three innings, but with such a large deficit, the game went to Cadott, 20-0.

“We are struggling to find our identity early in the season,” said Cornell-Lake Holcombe coach Andy Lorenzen. “With recent injuries and multiple position changes, we are still trying to find consistency in the circle, as well.”

The Knights were hitless in the game, while Cadott finished with six hits combined, coming from sophomore Kaylee Reineke, with 2, and senior Rilei Weeks, juniors Abi Bowe, Karlee Davis and Kennedy Nerdrum all getting a hit.

“Two things that stuck out from the game, were Rilei Weeks’ inside-the-park homerun and Kasey Moldrem’s two shut-out innings,” said Rothbauer.

“I am stressing to the girls they will be there at the end, if they keep putting in the work,” said Lorenzen.
