Art Club Hears Ann Landers
The president and treasurer of the art club of Stratford high school, June Nikolay and Deb Zuelke, attended the annual Salvation Army banquet held at the Labor Temple in Wausau. After a delectable ham dinner they heard the honored speaker, Ann Landers Building Inspectors Position Changed
The position of building inspector for the Village of Stratford has been reorganized. The duties will be assumed by the Director of Public Works and the village clerk. Victor Wiesman, who has done a very capable job as inspector, completed his duties April 1.
Pressure by the DNR and EPA for greatly accelerated efforts to eliminate surface water from the sanitary sewer system prompted this action.
Track and Field to Start
Prospects for a winning season in boys’ track and field will be rather slim this year. Coach Barry Brubaker, assisted by Coach Bill Schroeder, feel this will be a rebuilding year. The Tigers are captained by senior Zach Hilgemann and junior Jim Zuelke.

Junior High math contes
Chris Kafka, Kyle Laessig, Nicole Picotte and Jill Landwehr represented Stratford Junior High at the Pittsville Public Schools who sponsored the math contest. The students took five tests of 15 minutes each. Eight schools participated in the contest. Mark Kingston accompanied the Gifted and Talented students.
Stratford HCE meets
The Stratford HCE club met in the Stratford Library with president Marie Mullins presiding. Donetta Ulrich spoke on “Alternative Medicine” and Doris Weber spoke on a program offered by Theresa Blume and her book “Hope for Tomorrow.”

Werner is chosen as Washington delegate
Larry Werner, a safety patrol member at Edgar Middle School, has been chosen as a delegate to Washington D.C. Larry, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Hilbert Werner, will be one of about a thousand boys and girls from Wisconsin who will visit Washington D.C. in May.
Athens Sports Awards
Winter sports awards at Athens High School were given recently with trophies in wrestling and basketball heading the list. Winners included Randy Schaetzl, Andy Braun, John Peter, Keith Beyer, Bruce Grahm, Steve Braun and Frank Redmann.
Scouts to have special Mets date
Local Cubs and Scouts of the Samoset Council including Marathon, Edgar and Athens will be saluted by the Wausau Mets in a game against Waterloo. The salute is part of a program the Scouts call “Spring into Action.”

Scotch Creek bridge will be replaced
Starting in May, Edgar motorists and pedestrians will use a temporary, wooden-plank bridge to get across Scotch Creek while a new permanent bridge is under construction.
Marathon Post will donate
TheAlois Dreikosen Post #469 of theAmerican Legion held their regular monthly meeting. Steve Warren, Marathon High School baseball coach, informed the group that he would like to purchase a flagpole for the ball diamond, along with a loudspeaker. The Post voted to buy a flagpole and flag, but it was decided to try and get by with the speaker it has.
A complex machine
Athens High School students Stetson Oelke and David Stevens took first place in a Rube Goldberg machine contest held atAthens High School. The pair from the high school Engineering class will participate in the state competiotion at UW—Milwaukee. The object of the contest is to perform a simple task using as many steps (limit of 20) as possible.
2000 – Class Act
The Stratford High School Swing Choir will compete at the State Music Festival at UW-Stevens Point in early May.

2000 – These kids count
Athens Elementary School teacher Craig Diedrich and his fifth grade class are pictured hard at work putting together a school census. The project coincides with the recent completion of the ten-year US Census. The students will graph out census results as a mathematics unit.
