Excellent Crowd Attend Concert
Even though the weather wasn’t very cooperative, the third annual spring concert presented by the students of the Stratford Elementary School proved to be very successful with a crowd of nearly 400 in attendance. The students are under the direction of Mrs. Klumpyan.
Club Donates Wheel Chair to Loan Closet The Stratford Marathon Bridge group has donated a new wheelchair to the invalid nook which is sponsored by the Stratford Homemakers’ club. The gift represents an accumulation of funds raised by the group in the past several years.

Subdivisions to have roads paved
Residents of the City View and South Ridge Drive areas met with engineer Larry Koopman and the Stratford public works committee to discuss the $400,000 proposed summer road construction project. Koopman explained that the project includes curb, gutter and blacktop as well as water and sewer improvements on Hemlock Street, City View Drive, South Ridge Drive and part of South Street.
National Honor Society
Eleven students from Stratford High School were inducted into membership of the Melvin Guenther Chapter of the National Honor Society during a ceremony at the high school. They are Amanda Boville, Laura Pfahning, Sara Knoll, Andrea Kramer, Melissa Spindler, Kristen Koontz, Krystal Smith, Rachel Peters, Dustin Kincaid, Ken Spindler, and Amanda Landwehr.

Red Raiders Are State Champs!
Tom Weinkauf, Marathon head basketball coach, said that to win the state basketball championship was a wonderful feeling, just tremendous. Marathon won the class C championship against Pardeeville by a score of 65-57. Larry Heindl, Randy Krautkramer and Claude Seubert were all named to the Class C All-Tournament team.
Former Edgar man gets high honors
An Edgar, high school graduate, Dr. Dennis G. Maki, was designated the first Ovid O. Meyer Clinical Scholar in ceremonies at the University of Wisconsin Medical School. Dr. Maki, is a 1958 Edgar graduate and the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Maki.
Athens Cubs get Arrow of Light honor
Kevin Sjostrom and David Pagel were awarded the Arrow of Light. Both are members of Athens Cub Scout Pack 450. Sjostrom is a fifth grade student at Athens Elementray School and Pagel is in the fifth grade at St. Anthony’s Catholic School, Athens.

A gift for lifting
Dustin Kreft, 17, Marathon, earned a third place in the 148 lb. class at the USA Power Lifting nationals held at Neenah High School. Kreft, who has been seriously lifting weights for three years, said he squat pressed 430 pounds, bench pressed 250 pounds and dead lifted 460 pounds.
Athens police recover three stolen vehicle
A 17-year-old Drummand man faces three felony counts after a police search party located him in a woods near Merrill, fleeing from a truck stolen in Athens. Athens Police Chief Mike Rayala reported that the man stole a car in Wisconsin Rapids, drove to Athens, and stole two more vehicles.
Outstanding volunteer
Athens Middle School special education teacher Tammy Kornack received an Outstanding Volunteer Award for her work with Special Olympics. Kornack has served as Special Olympics Agency Manager for the past two years.

Science nite
Four year old Ashley Wood successfully sends a wood and paper glider through a hula-hoop target in the Edgar Public Schools’ East Gym. Edgar Elementary school families constructed the model airplanes as part of an annual science night supported by a grant from the Wausau Area Community Foundation.
