Results of FHA Demonstrations

The district demonstration contest was held at the Stratford High School. In the eighth grade division, Mary Gorman and Betty Jo Tift received an A for their demonstration “Be Good To Your Hair!” In the senior division Sandy Hubert received an A for her illustrated talk entitled “With Pen In Hand.”

New Pastor Will Serve at St. John’s

The Rev. James E. Reiff was installed as pastor of the American Lutheran churches, St. John’s in the Town of Wien, and Peace in Town of Frankfort, on Sunday. STRATFORD JOURNAL

Spelling bee wizards

Laura Weigel, grade 8, Rachel Hermeier, grade 6, and Jackie Leick, grade seven, will represent Stratford public schools at the regional spelling bee to be held at Athens. Students were allowed to write the words on a slate before saying the spelling.

Spring fire danger is already high

Unseasonably warm temperatures and an earlier than average snowmelt have combined to produce high fire danger conditions in many areas of the state. We’re about three to four weeks ahead of the average strting date for what we consider our spring fire season said a specialist with the DNR.

Parish mission of renewal comes to area Catholic churches A parish mission of renewal will take place at St. Joseph Parish in Stratford and St. Andrew Parish in Rozellville from Sunday, March 19, through Thursday, March 23. Capuchin Franciscan Fr. Adrian Staehler will conduct the mission. Fr. Adrian emphasizes that all of his talks are related to practical situations which the members of the congregation face each day as they try to make their Gospel faith a central focus in their lives.

Kulas Retires

John Kulas retired last week after completing 45 years of service with the Bank of Athens. Kulas started working for the bank in February 1930, and was appointed assistant cashier in January 1963. In January 1970 he was appointed to his present position as cashier. The employees and directors of the bank recently honored Mr. and Mrs. Kulas with a dinner at the Skylite Club. The Kulas’ was given a trip to Hawaii as a gift of appreciation.

Marathon advances to regional tournament

Marathon, the number one rated class C school in the state, will head the list of schools to play in the WIAA regional to be played at Owen-Withee against the home team. Marathon advanced to the regionals following beating Edgar, while Stratford beat Athens to advance to Owen-Withee where they will meet Abbotsford.

FFA members get awards at Athens

FFA awards were presented at the annual FFA banquet last week. Gary Belanger won the “Outstanding Greenhand” award. Kelly Bunkelman was named Outstanding Chapter Farmer. Dave Schreiner earned the DeKalb Award.

Edgar to buy railroad right of way

The Edgar Village Board agreed to purchase six acres of old railroad right of way from Geneva Lakes Cold Storage for $20,000. The firm owns the former ConAgra beef slaughterhouse on Third Avenue. Village board members said that land purchase fits with both utility and park and recreation plans.

St. John’s spellers

St. John’s Catholic School of Edgar held its 2000 Spelling Bee. Winners were: first place, Megan Grenwalt; second place, Rebecca Kaiser; third place, Miranda Schmitt; fourth place, Matthew Christiansen; and fifth place, Cody Heil.

2000 – Cat in the Hat

Nancy Ewan donned a special costume to entertain Athens Elementary School pre-kindergarten students with a reading of “The Cat in the Hat.” The event was part of Read Across America Day celebrating the birthday of children’s book author Dr. Seuss.
