County Firemen Meet
The Marathon County Fire and Rescue Association met at the village hall in Stratford. About 60 firemen were present, representing Athens, Edgar, Marathon, Hamburg, Hewitt, Schofield, Spencer, Colby, Mosinee, Wausau, Rib Mountain and Stratford.
Sub-Regional Tourney Here This Weekend
Stratford public schools will host the WIAAsub-regional basketball tournament on Thursday and Saturday. The winner of Saturday’s two games will advance to the regional at Owen-Withee. The price of tickets are adults, $1.00 and students $.75.

Kolb nominated for Kohl scholarship
Cindi Kolb has been nominated from Stratford High School as the Herb Kohl Student Scholarship Program candidate. Students are evaluated on their leadership, citizenship, school and community involvement and academic achievement. Kolb is the daughter of Paul and Ellen Kolb of Stratford.
Stratford girls conference champ
Julie Karl has been nominated from thee Stratford High School to attend the National Youth Science Foundation Camp. The 2000 Camp will be held in West Virigina from June 29 through July 24. Karl is the daughter of Dale and Sue Karl of Stratford.
Stratford girls conference champ
The 2000 Stratford Tiger girls basketball team are Division 3 Marawood Conference champions. Their season included a 16-2 conference record and a 18-2 overall record. Members of the team are Val Pischel, Mandy Skwierczynski, Kim Chrouser, Lee Ann Sutton, Erin Spindler, Dana Tackes, Sarah Brown, Andrea Kramer, Krystal Smith, Amber Glinecki and Jessica Bohman. They are coached by Curt Schmidt and Craig Rogney.

Athens board news
In a routine meeting of the Athens Village Board, the trustees heard of the progress made in razing the old fair barn, the work on the Commuity Hall and discussed the raising of water rates. Chief of Police Gary Nehrbass introduced Joel Walsh, who was hired as a part-time officer for the village.
South Pacific to be presented at MHS
Donna Sicklinger, a senior at Marathon High School is featured as Nellie Forbush in the musical “South Pacific” which will be presented by the music department.Also featured in leads are Doug Lang, Sue Southworth, Terry Lang and Don Litzer.
Drama is Set
“Spell of Evil,” a three-act drama, will be presented at the Edgar High School. The cast under the direction of Laura Gille and Gerald Waara, is now in rehearsal.

Wien shed burns
A fire destroyed a shed at the Lloyd Buchholz property on Aspen Drive. The shed was housing 65 emus in the Town of Wien but except for one bird, the flock survived without injury.
They’re state champs
Edgar and Athens High Schools did not send quantities of athletes to this past week’s WIAA state individual wrestling tournament. But they did send quality. Two local state finalists, 130 pounder Kevin Koch, Edgar, and Matt Natzke, 140 pounds, Athens both won their championship matches Saturday night. Edgar’s Koch earned his second title while Natzke, Athens, is a three-peater.
Brains and Brawn
Andrea Metz and Kelly Krautkramer, St. Mary’s Catholic School 8th graders, participated in the annual La Crosse Diocese Brains and Brawn competition. Metz was named to the all tournament academic team and Krautkramer was picked to be a part of the all tournament basketball team.
2000 – State Champion
Derek Jochimsen made Stratford High School history when he took first place at the WIAA Division III Individual Wrestling Tournament. Jochimsen is the first wrestler to win a state title in wrestling in 28 years. Pictured are Will Stuart, Coach Joe Schwabe and Derek Jochimsen.

Bazaar
This Edgar tike seems pleased with a prize won at Sunday afternoon’s annual bazaar, a fund raiser for St.
John Catholic Parish. The school basement was packed with people enjoying fun games.
