Stratford Homes Holds 1st Annual Dealer Show
A very successful dealer-days held by Stratford Homes was enjoyed by dealers from Minnesota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Michigan and North Dakota. Nine newly constructed homes were on the Stratford Homes lot for display and inspection.
Cold Trip to Woodruff
Seven snowmobilers from Stratford dared the cold weather and made a trip to Woodruff and back this last weekend. The round trip measured 238 miles. It was 20 degrees below zero when the group left Saturday morning and 25 below when they returned Sunday evening. The seven snowmobilers were Hank Marohl Jr., John Mullen, Jim Zuelke, Ardell and Diane Emon, Leon and Gordie Telschow. There was not a single bit of trouble with the machines.

Foods class visited
Tom Wischerchen from Auburndale was guest speaker to the Stratford foods classes on the topic of cheese. The Wischerchen Cheese factory began by Tom’s grandfather in 1936. Tom is a graduate of the University of Utah in food science and business.
Tom told about the decision to make feta cheese following a cheese tour in Greece and France. At Wischerchen’s cheese factory in Auburndale, 50% of their business is feta marketed by Kraft, Sargento, Cisco and others. Edam, gouda and blue cheese are presently made at Wischerchen’s. Carol Wisnewski is the classroom teacher.
Coach of the year
Stratford track coach Dennis Paulson recently received the District 2 Boys Track Coach of the Year from the Wisconsin Track Coaches Association. Paulson has coached track since 1990.

Edgar-Athens Family Leader are named
Kathleen Michalski and Becky Humpal have been named 1975 Betty Crocker Family Leader of Tomorrow winners at Edgar and Athens high schools, respectively. The girls won the honor by scoring high in a written knowledge and attitude examination administered to high school seniors throughout the country.
Sub-zero weather didn’t scare racers
The sixth annual A and H Snowmobilers Club snowmobile derby was held at Athens in sub-zero temperatures. Despite the cold, over 300 entries in 30 classes were on hand along with a sizeable crowd. Bob Hartwig, Athens, won the sportsmanship trophy.
Athens TV shop opens
Becky and Kasper Knab have a new television shop in Athens. They opened the shop recently and specialize in Quasar and RCA television sets. Service is also available on all makes and models. Knabs came from Mauston and live with their sons, Keith, Kevin and Kenny, at Holiday Courts mobile home park, Athens.

Ginseng growers launch new product
A group of ginseng growers are hoping to get tobacco chewers to kick their cheekbulging habit. Instead, they are offering an alternative herbal chew, a combination of shredded ginseng and dried apple soaked in essential flavoring oils such as wintergreen, cinnamon and cranberry. Their product, “Kik,” is now for sale at central Wisconsin convenience stores.
Marathon principal will take early retirement The Marathon Board of Education last week accepted a letter of early retirement resignation from high school principal Dennis Erstad. Erstad will work until June or until a suitable replacement is found.
2000 – Picture perfect
The Klemme Reserve was the sight of the Sleigh and Cutter Rally. Bud Suckow prepares to have his team of horses pull a heavy barrel over the snowy path while Ardell and Jeanette Klemme received a ride on the back of the roller.

2000 – Veterans’
Valentine tribute
Desert Storm veteran, Mike Seliger, Athens, with his daughters, Daisy Scout Miki and Brownie Scout Paige share the medals of honor he received from his service in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait in 1991. Seliger was part of the Scouts’ Valentines for Veterans project.
