MEDFORD CURLING - Girls battle for an extra-end win
MEDFORD CURLING
In a rollercoaster of a game against Waupaca on Tuesday afternoon, the Medford girls curling team came through in the extra end for a 10-9 win while the boys conceded after six ends taking a 9-3 loss.
The Medford girls, led by skip Caidyn Zenner, came together at key points to stay in the game after giving up some big ends.
Waupaca got on the board first with two in the first end. This was answered by Medford with two in the second end. Waupaca had the first of its two big ends in the third scoring three. Medford came back to lay one rock in the fourth end.
The girls took the lead in the fifth end with a nice four-ender to take a 7-5 lead. The Medford girls added to the lead by one in the sixth end.
Waupaca had a huge seventh end scoring four points to take a 9-8 lead and put the pressure on Medford in the eighth end. The girls put up a rock to push the game into an extra end, but with Waupaca having the hammer.
The last shot advantage had proven throughout the game to be a major factor, but in this case, Medford was able to come through under pressure and take the win.
On the boys side, things were a bit more lopsided against a strong Waupaca squad. The game was tight in the early ends with Medford holding Waupaca to one point each of the first two ends. Waupaca opened things up scoring three in the third end and having Medford trail 5-0.
The Medford boys rallied in the fourth end and got on the board with two points. Waupaca took advantage of the hammer and scored four in the fifth end to make the score 9-2. Medford was able to answer back with one point in the sixth end, but conceded after that.
Medford will be at the Wausau Curling Club today, Thursday, to take on Wausau East and next Thursday to face D.C. Everest.
