Lake Holcombe missed shots contribute to loss
By Ginna Young
Back in play after the holiday break, the Lake Holcombe boys basketball program was on the road to Glenwood City, Jan. 6, in a non-conference match. The game was what coach Dave Engel calls a “game of 10-point runs.”
In the opening 10 minutes of the game, it was tight, until a pair of Glenwood City players starting knocking down three-point shots to finish the half, sending the Chieftains into halftime, down by 19.
“We started the second half on a 15-6 run but, unforced turnovers led to 10 easy points for Glenwood,” said Engel.
Lake Holcombe continued to match their opponents’ runs, with sophomore Conner Kane’s dominate play inside, while senior Brian Strzok was picking them apart inside and out, and sophomore Emmit Johnson was getting to the rim. Despite their best efforts, the game went to the visitors, 81-53.
“Even though we continued to execute well offensively and defensively, there was a lid on the rim and shots didn’t drop,” said Engel. “Although it’s a loss, we were extremely happy to see Conner grow…in the low post tonight. If he continues to grow and attack like this, he’s going to be a force in our conference, for years to come.”
