Senior Card Group
The Senior Citizens card group met on Jan. 2 for weekly card playing at the Athens Area Fire and Ambulance Hall.
Two games of Sheepshead were played. Andy Hoef won first place and Butch Boris came in second in the first game. Steve Klockziem won first and Rick Schaetzl came in second in the second game.
Low score was David Perrodin. Newcomers are encouraged to come play Sheepshead every Thursday from 12:30-3:30 p.m. at the Athens fire hall.

Destiney Wampole has been named to the dean’s list at UW-Superior for academic achievement during the fall 2024 semester. To be named to the list, students must have completed 12 degree-seeking semester credits and achieved at least a 3.50 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale).

Book Club
The Athens Book Club will meet on Tuesday, Jan. 14, at 2 p.m. to discuss “The Storm We Made” by Vanessa Chan. In 1945 Malaya, a girl’s family is in terrible danger due to a choice she made 10 years earlier. Book Club

Medical supply closet
Edgar Community Church has taken over the medical supply closet started by the American Legion in the 1960s. The closet has a variety of personal home medical equipment available to the public, such as wheelchairs, crutches, walkers, lockers and toilet risers. The items are currently being kept in a storage unit, but the church plans to build a permanent storage shed. Donations of good-condition items, especially rollator walkers, are accepted.

Family Game Night
All ages are invited to Edgar Branch Library for Family Game Night on Wednesday, Jan. 15, from 3 to 6 p.m. There will be a variety of board games and card games available to play, or guests are welcome to bring their own. Chandler Schmidt has graduated from Winona State University in Winona, Minn. with a bachelor’s degrees in teaching health promotion and physical education.

Lexie Christopherson and Sarah Zuelke have been named to the dean’s list for the 2024 fall semester at Winona University in Winona, Minn. To be named to the list, a student must be an undergraduate enrolled fulltime (at least 12 credit hours) and achieve a minimum grade point average of 3.5.
Puzzle competition
Adults and teens can showcase their puzzle skills at a speed puzzling competition from Jan. 14-18 at the Stratford Branch Library. Teams of two to four will have up to 90 minutes to complete a 500-piece jigsaw puzzle. Participants should plan to arrive 10 minutes ahead of their scheduled time, as the competition will begin exactly at stated time.
Competition times are Tuesday, Jan. 14, from 5-6:30 p.m.; Thursday, Jan., 16 from 56:30 p.m.; Friday, Jan. 17, from 10:30 a.m.12 p.m. and 1-2:30 p.m.; and Saturday, Jan. 18 from 10:30 a.m.-12 p.m.
