Friday night was much more important than a regular-season varsity boys basketball game between Edgar and Stratford, which the Tigers ended up winning 52-40 in Edgar. The Edgar and Stratford area communities rallied together to fundraise money for Stratford High School Class of 1997 valedictorian Jennifer Remus, whose 14-year-old freshman daughter, Rubi Vergara, died in the Dec. 16 shooting at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison.

tickets for Weiks’ Pub & Grill in Rib Falls, which ended up with the winning raffle ticket chosen at halftime of Friday’s game. The raffle ticket winners from Weiks’ Pub & Grill were Colleen and Bobby Weiks, Joe Weidman, Bill Tess and Dan Dvorak. Weiks’ Pub & Grill won $922 in the 50/50 raffle split, which it donated back to Jennifer Remus.

“We all agreed that’s what we would do if we won,” Colleen Handrick said.

Friday night’s 50/50 raffle ended up raising $2,220 for Jennifer Remus because there were some additional money donations on the side.

The Stratford varsity boys and girls basketball programs also raised $1,200 in donations for Jennifer Remus during the Dec. 17 girls home game against Auburndale and home boys game against Marathon.

Stratford varsity boys head basketball coach Curt Schmidt is pleased to see local residents support a Stratford High School graduate during this difficult time in her life.

“We have extremely compassionate community members that have led the way on this,” he said. “We are just hoping that something like this can help.”

Rubi Vergara’s funeral service was on Saturday at City Church in Madison. Jennifer Remus still has many relatives living in the Stratford area. Her brother Brian Remus and his wife, Heidi, live in Stratford along with her parents, Carl and Pat Remus. Another brother, Andy Remus and his wife, Stacy, live in Arpin.
