MEDFORD CURLING

The Medford girls curling team added to its early-season win streak with solid wins at Waupaca on Monday and at home over D.C. Everest on Tuesday.

The boys put together a strong effort on Tuesday too for a win over D.C. Everest, bouncing back from a lopsided loss at Wauapaca the day before.

At Waupaca on Monday, the Medford girls under skip Caidyn Zenner looked headed for a lopsided win, scoring four in the first end and three more in the fourth. After the first three ends, Medford was up 8-0.

Things started to unravel in the fourth end as the Waupaca girls capitalized on their hammer and scored three and then stole a point in the fifth end to bring the game to 8-4. Medford answered back with a point in the sixth end and held Waupaca to one in the seventh end.

According to coach Stu Amundson, the Medford girls ran into trouble in the eighth end by leaving rocks in play. That allowed Waupaca the potential to score a big end. The Comets capitalized on that and scored three points bringing their score to eight. The Medford girls held on and took the 9-8 win.

Coming home on Tuesday, the girls played a solid game to beat the Evergreens 7-4. It was a back-and-forth game between the evenly-matched teams with the score at 3-2 after four ends. The Medford girls were able to widen their lead from there to take the win.

Medford’s three-member girls team is 4-0.

The b0ys were dominated early against a tough Waupaca boys team. Waupaca scored two in the first end, another two in the second end, and four in the third end to jump to an 8-0 lead. Medford got on the board with a point in the fourth end. Waupaca answered back with two more points in the fifth end. Medford scored again in the sixth end, but was shut down when Waupaca scored another four points in the seventh end to make the score 14-2.

Things were very different for the Raiders on Tuesday as the young squad continues to improve under skip Jaeden Brandner.

The boys scored a point each in the first and second ends before picking up three in the third end and two in the fourth end to have a solid 7-0 lead through the first half of play. D.C. Everest rallied and attempted to claw their way out, putting five points on the board and holding Medford to a gain of just one point in the second half of the contest. The Medford boys took the much-needed 8-5 win.

The teams are at home on Tuesday, hosting an always-challenging Wausau West team before heading to Marshfield on Dec. 12.
