Donations sought for hurricane victims

Nan and John Sowieja of rural Greenwood are once again collecting donations for those affected by the storm damage and flooding from Hurricane Helene. They dropped off a trailer full of supplies and spent a week volunteering in Tennessee in early October. Now, they plan to return and deliver food donations to BreadBasket food pantry in Newport, Tenn.

“This food pantry lost everything and is rebuilding… This Thanksgiving, please consider helping those in need,” said Nan. Items needed include tuna packets, oatmeal in packets, cereal, macaroni and cheese, Tuna Helpers, Hamburger Helpers, rice packets, peanut butter, jelly and fruit snacks. The pantry is in need of simple, make ‘n take and single-serving items to hand out to individuals and families. No canned goods, please. “The food pantry coordinator told me that single-packet items work great as the majority [of people] are in tents,” said Nan. Donations will be accepted through Nov. 25 at East Fountain Chiropractic, 124 N Main St., Greenwood. Remaining drop-off times are this Thursday, Nov. 21, and Monday, Nov. 25, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 to 5 p.m. The Sowiejas will also be parked in front of the Greenwood library on Nov. 26 from 5 to 7 p.m. to receive any final donations. The Sowiejas plan to leave Nov. 29 to deliver the donations. They will also be working with Samaritan’s Purse to rebuild homes. To make a monetary donation or for any questions, contact Nan at 970-379-4528. Follow the “Community of Greenwood” Facebook page for updates.
