School News

On Wednesday night there will be a panel discussion on the subject “senior citizens.” Participating on the panel are both senior citizens and young people and the purpose of it is to discuss the changes in the lives of the elderly through the years and the problems and the situations encountered by them.

Scout News

The scouts of Troop 688 met with Scoutmaster James Linzmayer talking to the scouts about inflation and discussed the speech given by President Ford. They heard pointers on the saving of paper and ways of cutting down on gas and electricity consumption.

Sock hop

The Stratford S.A.D.D. (Students Against Dangerous Decisions) sponsored a Sock Hop to end Red Ribbon Week. The costume winners were Connor Brock, Casey O’Reilly, Alyssa Fisher, Sheila Brock, Amanda Mather and Caleb O’Reilly.

Germanfest set at Zion Lutheran

Zion Lutheran Church will host their 12th annual Germanfest dinner on Sunday. The proceeds from the dinner are deposited in the Zion Lutheran Community Crisis Fund, and given as direct aid to local individuals and families within the Stratford School District. MARATHON JOURNAL

FFA News

Jeffrey Seubert and David Krautkramer attended the national FFA convention in Kansas City. They attended the American Royal where the FFA queen was crowned, national livestock judging was held and a horse show.

1974 Population Announced

Ray Ott, County Clerk, announced recently that the final estimate for Marathon County population is 104,264.

St. John’s church to note 75th anniversary

St. John the Baptist Catholic church, Edgar, has been a landmark in the Marathon County village since its erection in 1900. The congregation will celebrate the church’s 75th anniversary with a mass, banquet and afternoon program.

Cross Country Champs

Edgar High School’s cross country squad captured the Marawood Conference championship by upending three-time defending champion, Nekoosa, and four other schools. The team was led by Jim Liss and Kurt Kleinstick.

Brownie Investiture

Sixteen first and second grade Athens girls officially became members of the Brownies in investiture ceremonies last week. The ceremony, to which parents and teachers were invited, was held at St. Anthony’s Catholic school.

Volleyball Win

Athens girls upset Rib Lake on Parent’s Night taking three of five games from the visitors. Key players were Linda Literski, Cheryl Zocher and Tammy Blake.

Local funeral homes purchased

Effective last week, Greg Zoromski, owner of Peterson Funeral Home, Wausau, purchased from Tom Kraemer the real estate and business of Kraemer Funeral Homes of Edgar, Athens, Marathon and Wausau. The purchase will mean the merger of the two businesses and the new organization will be known as Peterson/ Kraemer Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc.

Wisconsin’s Biggest Dairy

In the Town of Maine, the VanDerGeest expansion project is continuing. Full operation is expected to start in December which will have the capacity to milk 3,000 cows, have a 130 foot milking parlor, a manure pit capable of holding 30 million gallons of waste, and will use an anticipated 195,000 gallons of water a day.

1999 – Celebrated Employee

Badger Basket employee Verna Barkow, center, was recently honored for 25 years of consecutive employment at the Edgar company. Company president Jon Rassmussen and supervisor Peggy Weiland present Barkow with a commemorative watch.

Stratford Cubs and Webelos who participated in the recent Marshfield Chuck Wagon are Derik Dietel, Carl Uthmeier, Dustin Hauke, Gaven Schwarze, Adam Helmsing and Shawn Graveen. The scouts were led through the course by Don Uthmeier and Lisa Schwarze.
