Going up against 12 other teams from the area, the Cadott cross country runners headed to Neillsville, Oct. 19, for the Cloverbelt Conference meet.
“We continue to enjoy incredible weather, with the temperature topping out around 72 degrees,” said coach Dan Yeager. “This course was mostly flat, with a few rolling hills.”
Leading the way for the Hornets, was the boys team, who narrowly missed the top placing.
“Our boys put forth great effort and showed determination, as they attempted to overcome losing Kaden Roen, missing, as he was sick,” said Yeager. “The boys just missed out on a second place trophy, losing to Regis by seven points.”
Individually, sophomore Beau Steinke took top honors, ending in fifth place, in a time of 16:59, while freshman Jacob Pilgrim set a new personal best, by almost a minute (18:36). Junior Saibyn Will followed that up with 22nd (19:08), while sophomore Jon Phelps set a new best, placing 27th (19:36.3).
Sophomore Garret Engel came in 38th (20:26), with sophomore Klay Handrick setting a new personal best, finishing 57th (22:37), while sophomore Max Demulling got a new best of 23:11.
Giving their best effort, the girls took seventh overall, with senior Lyla Weggen in 19th (22:34), with a new personal record, followed by senior McKenna Steinke in 32nd (24:00), also setting a new best, while senior Mia Weggen was 46th (25:49).
Continuing to improve, was freshman Saffron Riley-Stark, who earned a new personal best, placing 50th (26:14), while freshman Tessa York and junior Marley Mengel were neckand- neck, ending up 49th (29:04) and 50th (29:09), respectively. Senior Adrianna Goodman 14th among JV runners (29:42).
Senior Cortney Weggen, and juniors Iszy Sonnentag and Josie Roth were out, because of injury.
The Hornets now look to their home Sectional at Whispering Pines, Saturday, Oct. 26, in an attempt to punch their way to State.
“We would love to see fans join us, for a great day of running,” said Yeager.
