Mark your calendars to help with the 11th annual Maddie Thums Memorial Sew-a-Thon and the Colby Community Library’s Make-A-Difference Day (MADD). Plan to attend the event on Saturday, Oct. 26, from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the Colby Community Library.

The Marshfield Medical Center will receive items sewn for the Birth Center and Pediatrics Department. This year, the projects are ice pack covers, mini hospital gowns, and developmental hearts. Items to be sewn for youth programs at the CCL will be burp cloths, reversible bibs, and pillowcases.

Please bring sewing machines and notions. There will be tasks for people wishing to clip, turn, and press items. Over 500 items have been cut and are ready to sew.

If not all items are finished, they will be bagged with the patterns for people to pick up and take home to sew. The items should be returned by Friday, Nov. 15.

Through the years, volunteers have created and donated thousands of handmade projects to the medical facilities in Marshfield in memory of Maddie, a former nurse at St. Joseph’s Hospital and library volunteer.

The Make-A-Difference Day 2024 project is supporting Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP)—Spencer Chapter—by collecting needed items. The mission of this group is to make sure no child sleeps on the floor in our area. Twinsized bedding (new) will be accepted October 21-26. Sheet sets, mattress pads, comforters, and pillows are needed; homemade quilts (size 60” by 80” for bunk beds) will also be collected. Bring these items to the Colby Community Library. A soup, sandwich, and salad luncheon will be served at noon to all participants. Plan to visit to share a day of camaraderie with other service- minded community members. Please RSVP to the library at 715-223 2000 if you are attending so we can plan for food and space required. “Although she is no longer with us, ‘Maddie Day’ helps us remember all the good she did at the hospital and at the library. The CCL has always been fortunate to have dozens of dedicated volunteers who give back to the community. We hope to see many helpers on October 26 at the CCL,” stated Vicky Calmes, Colby Community Library Director.

Assisting Calmes with planning the project is Friends of the Colby Community Library member Ailene Loertscher. Financial sponsors are Creative Hideaway of Dorchester, Thrivent Action Teams, and Friends of the Colby Community Library.
