The Marathon varsity boys cross country squad took third place while competing against larger schools in Thursday’s Seymour Invitational. Green Bay Preble won the boys race championship with a low team score of 23 points, followed by New London in second place with 95 points and Marathon in third with 121.

Sophomore Logan Peters was the Marathon boys’ highest finisher by taking 13th place in 17 minutes, 20 seconds. Sophomore Brady Annis placed 17th in 17:55.80, sophomore Matthew Kindlarski was 29th in 18:42.50, junior Gavin Matthiae 31st in 18:50.60, junior John Kahn 39th in 19:01.40 and freshman Brevyn Johnson 45th in 19:14.40.

The Marathon varsity girls cross country team took 11th place among 13 teams competing at the Seymour Invitational. Senior Shilo Blake was the Marathon girls’ highest finisher by taking third place in 20:21.30. Sophomore Aubrey Fieri placed 43rd in 23:52.40, freshman Bristal Bauman was 50th in 24:12.30, junior Mya Yach 76th in 26:13.40 and sophomore Greenly Treankler 84th in 26:54.60.

Athens competes in Rapids

Athens varsity boys and girls cross country runners competed in Saturday’s Jim Newman Cross Country Invite at Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln High School. The Bluejays didn’t have complete teams to place in the team standings.

Bluejays senior girl Brianna Sheahan took 13th place among 102 runners in 20:15.80. Sophomore Ellis Baer placed 34th in 21:06.90 and senior Aleah Frahm was 81st in 24:11.50.

Athens freshman boy Ben Hartwig took 41st among 112 runners in 17:49. Junior Eli Paul placed 89th in 20:04.20 and junior Brandon Krause was 95th in 20:27.80.

Upcoming conference meet

The Athens, Edgar, Marathon and Stratford varsity boys and girls cross country teams will compete in the Marawood Conference championship races this Thursday, Oct. 17, at Camp Forest Springs, located at N8890 Forest Lane in Westboro. The meet is hosted by Prentice/Rib Lake. The varsity girls race starts at 4 p.m. and the varsity boys race is at 4:45 p.m.

It should be a very competitive race between the boys teams for the Marawood Conference championship because four of them are ranked in the top 10 in the latest Wisconsin Cross Country Coaches Association (WCCCA) Division 3 poll. The Prentice/Rib Lake boys are currently ranked No. 1 in Division 3 followed by Phillips at No. 2. The Stratford boys are ranked No. 6 and Marathon is No. 7.

Regarding the girls, Wisconsin Rapids Assumption is ranked No. 1 in the WCCCA’s Division 3 poll. The Stratford girls are ranked 13th and Auburndale is 16th.
