Attend Laird Leadership Conference
John Jaeckel, Cheryl Ulrich, Kevin Leick and Jennifer Meyer were at the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point as participants in the fifth annual Laird Youth Leadership Conference.
Ardell Klemme Elected to Office
Ardell G. Klemme, Klemme Sales, Inc., Stratford has been elected to a key office for his area in a nationwide organization of Chevrolet dealers. He will serve as spokesman for 18 Chevrolet dealers in the district at organization meetings.

FHA-HERO leadership lab
Nine Stratford High School FHA officers attended a meeting held at UW-Stevens Point. The theme was “Gateway to the Future.” Local officers attending were: Erin Ullman, Jenny Marsh, Brandi Karl, Shaun Landwehr, Katie Kuenhold, Rebecca Mather, Stacy Deiler, Katie Leick and local president Dana Tackes. Attend Workshop
Brian Stieber, Lenore Levandoski, Shelly Ringle, Irene Hornung, all of Marathon High School participated in the Laird Youth Leadership Workshop. The conference theme was New Opportunities in the 1970’s.
Raiders To Meet Tigers In Final Game
Marathon girls’ volleyball team split winners with the Spencer Rockets. Marathon varsity won three out of five games, and the Spencer Jayvees won two out of three.
In varsity action, Sue Dreikosen and Andi Paff served 14 and 12 points respectively to lead Marathon to the win.
Marathon’s final two games will be at home with Pittsville Monday, Oct. 21, and Stratford Thursday, Oct. 24.

Representatives at Laird Conference
Students attended a day long leadership conference at UW-Stevens Point to spark involvement in problems of the day. Keynote speaker was Caspar Weinberger, secretary of the Department of Health, Education and Welfare. Attending from Athens were Lori Giese, John Peter, Lynette Mader and Tom Gauerke. Edgar delegates were Roger Boisen, Denise Karlin, Sheryl Mueller and Kathy Michalski.
Calf Kill
Wisconsin NFO members and farmers from local counties made it clear that they won’t stand for low beef prices by holding a “Calf Kill” in a field by Curtiss Corners. An NFO spokesman stated that between 250-300 calves from this area were killed and buried in two, long ditches.

Two alumni join Edgar’s hall of fame
During a recent assembly two Edgar High School alumni were inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame. The honor was awarded to Dewey Schulz, Class of ’43, and Dr. Jerry King, Class of ’67.
Blood drive
Edgar High School students participated in a Marathon County Blood Bank blood drive to benefit Jackie Garton, a senior injured in a September car crash. The students donated 50 units of blood. Garton, who is recuperating at home, was a surprise guest at a student assembly held in early October.
Athens Jaycees
The Athens Jaycees held their monthly meeting led by president Jody Gauerke. The Jaycees will sponsor a Packer Party at the 11th Frame and will have a Christmas Tree sale in December.
Principal’s Day
St. Mary’s School students celebrated National Catholic School Principal Day in conjunction with Principal Janice Michlig’s birthday. Michlig has served as principal at St. Mary’s for 10 years, following 23 years as a teacher.

1999 – A donation with class
The Athens High School Class of 1949 presented a donation of $1,555 to Mark Smits, school district administrator. Class members presenting the check are Alvina (Augustine) Henrichs, Frances (Riehle) Czech, Bob Gruling, Cecelia (Burger) Johnson and Fay (Dugas) Gohdes.
