By Nathaniel Underwood

Another week, another victory chalked up in the win column for the Colby/Abby swim team. The co-op squad has started their Great Northern Conference campaign with three straight victories, picking up their latest on the road in Mosinee, where they downed the Indians 92-54.

The visiting Colby/Abby squad dominated last Thursday afternoon’s affair, taking the final seven events and winning nine of the 11 total contests.

The co-op got off to a hot start after both their relays topped the Mosinee squad in the first event of the day, the 200-yard medley relay. The team of Madisyn Schraufnagel, Brezlyn Boyer, Jordan Jakel and Chloe Cihlar cruised to the first place spot in the event, finishing with a time of 2:06.01. Colby/Abby’s second team, consisting of Kate Sheahan, Sage Lueth, Hazel Flink and McKinley Meyer found themselves in a tight race with the Indians’ relay, but the co-op squad narrowly came out on top, with their time of 2:24.40 edging out Mosinee by four-tenths of a second. The second place finish for the second relay gave Colby/Abby a 12-2 advantage right out of the gate and the co-op never looked back.

Ella Baumann took first in the next event, the 200-yard freestyle, with a time of 2:28.42 and second place finishes from Lueth and Flink in the 200-yard IM and the 50-yard freestyle respectively kept the co-op ahead at the break.

Colby/Abby held complete control over the later portion of the meet. Flink started things off with a victory in the 100-yard butterfly after posting a time of 1:15.90 and the co-op stretched out its lead by taking the top three spots in the 100-yard freestyle. Baumann grabbed first with a time of 1:06.34 and Bryleigh Boyer and Meyer followed in second and third after finishing the race with times of 1:10.51 and 1:13.67.

Cihlar took first in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 6:04.96, Schraufnagel picked up a victory in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:04.63 and Jakel posted a time of 1:22.89 in the 100-yard breaststroke to claim the top spot, allowing Colby/Abby to win the final three individual events. Lueth added a second place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing with a time of 1:26.51.

The co-op also picked up wins in the final two relays of the day. The team of Schraufnagel, Baumann, Jakel and Cihlar grabbed the top spot in the 200-yard freestyle, posting a time of 1:54.56 while the team of Cihlar, Baumann, Schraufnagel and Bryleigh Boyer defeated the Mosinee relay in the 400-yard freestyle with a time of 4:22.67. Colby/ Abby’s second relay very nearly grabbed second place in the the 200-yard freestyle, with the team of Lueth, Meyer, Flink and Bryleigh Boyer putting up a time that was two-hundredths of a second slower than the Mosinee relay, finishing with a time of 2:11.94.

Colby/Abby now sits tied atop the GNC with Rhinelander after the Hodags defeated Medford 125-45 last Thursday to remain similarly undefeated. The co-op will look to capture their fourth straight GNC dual meet victory as they host Antigo this Thursday, Sept. 26. The Red Robins picked up their first victory of the season last week after defeating Tomahawk 72-69 in the closest GNC dual of the season so far. The meet is to begin at 5:30 p.m.
