C/A swim defeats Lakeland, improves to 2-0

The Colby/Abbotsford swim team went 2-1 in their three duals over the past week, splitting a pair of duals in Black River Falls last Tuesday before coming up with their second straight Great Northern Conference victory by downing Lakeland at home on Thursday.

Colby/Abby snatched their second conference dual victory last Thursday, coming out on top in a closely contested meet against the Lakeland Thunderbirds, 90-77.
After Lakeland jumped out to an early lead by winning the first event of the afternoon, the 200-yard medley relay, the co-op came through with victories in the next five events to regain control of the contest.
Madisyn Schraufnagel claimed the top spot in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:11.23 and Ella Baumann secured her team’s hold on the event by taking second with a time of 2:28.16.
Jordan Jakel followed up with a win in the 200-yard IM, defeating Lakeland’s Kasey Wise by just over a second. Chloe Cihlar then picked up a victory in the 50yard freestyle for Colby/Abby, winning with a time of 26.81 seconds, which gave them a slim lead heading into the second half of events.
Schraufnagel added her second win of the afternoon in the first event out of the break, winning the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:05.65. Hazel Flink’s second place in the event boosted the co-op further. She narrowly defeated Lakeland’s Daryn Smolinksi by two-tenths of a second in one of the closest races of the meet, finishing with a time of 1:19.13.
The title of closest finish of the afternoon came in the next event, the 100-yard freestyle. While Brezlyn Boyer was able to easily secure the co-op’s fifth straight victory by posting the only sub-one minute time in the event, finishing in 59.61 seconds, the race for third place was much more hotly contested. Baumann was able to fend off a furious finish from Lakeland’s Haidyn Pfannerstill, defeating her by twohundredths of a second to claim third with a time of 1:06.85.
The Thunderbirds claimed the top spots in the final three individual events of the meet, but Colby/Abby was able to maintain their advantage by winning both the 200-yard and the 400-yard freestyle relays. The team of Jakel, Schraufnagel and Brezlyn and Bryleigh Boyer won the 200yard freestyle with a time of 1:55.31 while the four person squad of Cihlar, Schraufnagel, Jakel and Brezlyn Boyer solidified Colby/Abby’s second dual win by taking the top spot in the 400-yard freestyle, de-

feating the Lakeland relay by nearly 11 seconds with a time of 4:07.9 in the day’s final event.
Black River Falls Double Dual
The co-op also traveled to Black River Falls for a double dual against the Tigers and the Onalaska, Holman, Aquinas and Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau co-op, O/H/A, last Tuesday. The Colby/Abby squad split their duals at the meet, defeating Black River Falls 89-76 but losing to O/H/A 104--64.
Schraufnagel, Cihlar and Jakel all picked up wins in Black River Falls. Schraufnagel won both the 200-yard IM and the 100yard breaststroke, taking the top spot in the former with a time of 2:24.05 and posting a time of 1:16.06 to win the latter. Cihlar’s win came in the 50-yard freestyle, where she posted a time of 26.97 seconds and Jakel won the next event, the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:10.47.
Cihlar also had an individual second place finish in the 500-yard freestyle, posting a time of 6:11.22.
The 200-yard medley relay of Cihlar, Schraufnagel, Jakel and Brezlyn Boyer had one of the closest races of the evening. They went head to head against the O/H/A relay and were only narrowly defeated, falling just a few tenths of a second short of the first in the event. They claimed the runner up spot with a time of 2:02.65.
Colby/Abby also took second in the 400yard freestyle relay. Baumann, Jakel, Cihlar and Brezlyn Boyer combined to post a time of 4:13.91 to claim the spot.
Third place finishes included Baumann in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:27.35 and the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 1:06.48, Jakel in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:13.43, Brezlyn Boyer in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:13.62 and the 200-yard freestyle relay of Baumann, Schraufnagel and Brezlyn and Bryleigh Boyer with a time of 1:57.58.
