Homecoming Week
This week marks the start of homecoming for Stratford High. Students are taking part in various events throughout the week. Monday was blow ‘em away, with bubble gum being sold. Tuesday was red and black whip ‘em day, with red and black licorice being sold. Wednesday students dressed as they would in the 50’s. Thursday everyone should wear safari threads and a bonfire will be held after the Powder Puff game. Friday will be dress up day and the big game with Abby.
Equity robbed
Two local boys, 15 and 10 years old, were picked up Tuesday by the local police and county officers for breaking into the Equity Livestock Association building the preceding evening. About $50 and cigarettes were taken. They will be turned over to juvenile court.

Klemme’s donate for reserve shelter
The Village of Stratford accepted a gift of $5,000 from Ardell and Jeanette Klemme for the Klemme Reserve. A shelter and bathrooms will be built at the reserve using volunteer labor. Village clerk Margaret Brubaker will fill out the necessary paperwork for permits once a site is selected.
Zion Lutheran celebrates 100 years
On Sunday, September 12, at Zion Luthern Church, Stratford, a Festival Service was held to celebrate 100 years of ministry. Bishop Robert Berg of Rice Lake joined ELCA Pastor Sue Eidahl, Stratford, for the service. MARATHON JOURNAL

Golfers Enjoy Perfect Weather
The first annual Marathon City Golf Tournament was held at the Pine Valley Golf Course. There were 31 golfers who participated in the tourney according to Bill Jaeger who headed the tourney.

Athens Fire
The James Berres farm, Route 3, Athens had a fire from undetermined causes. The barn, a machine shed full of machinery, milk house, hay and eight head of cattle were lost in the blaze and the silo was severely damaged. High winds caused the fire to spread quickly.
Classes to be offered
Four adult evening classes will be offered at the Edgar High School this fall. Beginning typing, intermediate sewing, small gas engine maintenance, and personal income tax class are being offered.
Athens man completes Army course
Army Specialist Four Dale Anderson, 20, son of Mr. And Mrs. Glenn Anderson, Route 2, Athens, was awarded the Mechanic’s Badge while serving with the 42nd Maintenance Company in Germany.

Deputies will leave Edgar hall
Marathon County Sheriff Gary Marten said that he plans to move a satellite office out of the Edgar Village Hall to an empty spot in a west county Marathon county Highway Department building rather than pay rent to the village. Edgar trustees wanted to begin negotiations with the sheriff’s department at $300 per month.
Trinity Lutheran youth group
The Junior High Youth group of Trinity Lutheran Church of Athens recently met. Officers for the coming year are Beth Pecher, president, Kyle Frane, vice-president, Jenna Heier, secretary, and Tyler Harris, treasurer. Reporters are Elissa Balz and Brandon Zinkowich.
Assembly Passes Petrowski Bill
Freshman state Representative Jerry Petrowski (R-Marathon) passed his first bill through the state Assembly. It is a measure allowing school districts to deny employment to convicted felons, by a bipartisan vote of 8514. Petrowski said the bill returns responsibility for hiring decisions to local school boards.
