On a balmy opening night, the Cadott Hornets Football program saw the Augusta Beavers come to town, in a non-conference bout Aug. 23. While the coaches were unsure how the match would go, it was obvious the players were not about to lose on their home field.
The Hornets struck first, with a touchdown shortly after the first half began and while the extra point was no good, they soon put that and a few miscues behind them.
“It was nice to see the boys play with some passion and some fire,” said coach Todd Rykal. “We had a bit of a wake-up call during our scrimmage, as we didn’t play as well as we wanted, but the guys came together and worked hard to improve.”
That improvement showed on the field, as Cadott claimed a 33-8 victory over the Beavers.
Junior Aiden Rykal ended nine of 13 in passing, with 125 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while senior Warren Bowe captured 156 yards rushing and came up with 3 touchdowns. Sophomore Owen Fasbender also had 53 yards on rushing, with A. Rykal adding 28.
On the receiving end, senior Blane Mengel ended with 70 yards and a touchdown, followed by Fasbender and Bowe, with 23 yards, and sophomore Riley Winchell, who had 3 yards and a touchdown.
“We still have some things to clean up, but I was proud of the guys for their performance, it was fun game to be a part of,” said T. Rykal. “We will get back to work this week, though, as we have a very talented and very tough Stanley-Boyd team coming up.”
