July 11, 2012 -- About two dozen teenagers from Spencer and Neillsville spent time last week helping elderly community members with repair work and other projects at their homes. The volunteer work was part of a local initiative to help those in need.
-- The Loyal Legion had served its 100,000th steak at its most recent steak feed. To commemorate the occasion, the Legion was to offer special prices at its next monthly steak feed to be held on July 16.
-- The Loyal Ambulance Service had recently purchased a new ambulance to replace their old unit they had for the past 10 years. The new ambulance had cost $159,815.
July 16, 1997 -- Eugene Jensen of Spencer was named the Citizen of the Year at Spencerama Days held over the past weekend. He was chosen for the award for his work in the community as a Jaycee and member of the Spencer Chamber of Commerce. He was also the owner of Jensen Motors for many years.
-- The cities of Neillsville, Owen, Loyal and Greenwood were in the top 10 list of cities with the highest tax rate in Wisconsin. The rates for the cities were $33.75 for Neillsville, being first in the state, $32.22 for Owen placing it in fifth, $31.16 for Loyal, taking eighth in the state and $30.71 for Greenwood taking the ninth highest tax rate in the state.
-- The town of Hendren voted last week to approve construction of a new fire station in Greenwood. The vote made the township the fourth in the Greenwood area to favor the construction project and gave the fire department the needed majority to move forward with the project.
July 13, 1977 -- The Loyal City Council voted at their most recent meeting to create two wards to replace the present four wards in the city. This was the first major change to the city government since 1948 when the four wards were created and Loyal made into a city. The eight-man council in place at the time was to remain, with four aldermen to be chosen from each ward during the next election.
-- The Loyal City Council voted at their meeting to change the position of city clerk and city treasurer from an elected position to an appointed one. The last person to hold the elected city clerk position was Lawrence Davel.
-- Ann Gregorich was crowned as the new Miss Greenwood during Greenwood Dairy Days. She was crowned by retiring queen Laurie Jolivette.
-- Curb and gutter was to be installed on South La Salle Street in Spencer beginning on July 18. Work on the project was expected to be completed by Sept. 2.
July 12, 1962 -- Leonard Denk asked the Loyal City Council to allow angled parking on the street next to the A& W Root Beer stand in the city. The council formed a committee to survey the situation to see what could be done to provide more parking space in the immediate area.
-- A half gallon of ice cream was 69 cents.
