“Who these woods are I think I know.”
Doug Robertson quoted the famous Robert Frost line at the May 16 Medford Area School Board meeting at the district office as he defended the position of Hildegard and Loretta Kuse, the sisters who own and maintain the Kuse Preserve property which borders the district’s high school and elementary school property. The elderly sisters are the fourth generation of the family to live on the property since 1881.
The board spent almost an hour at its meeting trying to reach a final solution with the sisters. A special school board meeting was called for May 23 at 7 a.m. so all of the board members could view the property line together.
The dispute between the school and the Kuse sisters arose in December, 2012, when the school district sent them a letter asking to trim trees overhanging three school sheds on the northwest corner of the athletic field. The sisters consulted past surveys of the school boundary and discovered the sheds and a corner of the baseball field scoreboard are actually built on the Kuse property. The property line is also a boundary between the city and town of Medford.
