Falcon girls throttle the Screaming Eagles 57-21
The Abbotsford Falcons girls basketball program made it back to back wins on Thursday after trouncing the Chequamegon Screaming Eagles at home.
The Falcons scored over 50 points and held their opposition to below 25 points for the second straight game.
The Falcons’s 57-21 victory over the Screaming Eagles makes it a clean sweep after Abby dumped Chequamegon 70-19 in their season opener in November. The win also bumps Abby’s overall record to 10-4 and to 4-4 in league play.
The Falcons were in complete control of their conference clash with Chequamegon from start to finish. Abby’s defense held the 0-14 Screaming Eagles to a mere seven points in the first half.
Abbotsford’s offense was as devastating as its defense. Eight Falcons got on the board in the first half, and the Falcons high-low game flourished. Abby saw four players strike from Down Town, with Calley Ruesch canning a pair of triples.
Mikayla Klabon, Adriana Fuentes and Briseida Escalera all showed off their range with threes as Abby rode Escalera’s 13 points and Ruesch and Sydney Falteisek’s eight points apiece for a 41-7 advantage at the break.
In the second half Abbotsford head coach Ally Meserole subbed in much of her bench to give more players varsity experience, and the Falcons added another 16 points to their first half total.
In the end, three Falcons finished with double digits. Escalera led all players with 13 points, followed by Falteisek and Ruesch with 10 apiece.
Klabon had seven points, Bridgette Pogodzinski added four and Fuentes finished with three points. Bella Aguilera, Alea Graff, Stephany Espinio and Brissa Diaz all recorded two points apiece.
40-38
The Falcons took a step up in class when they travelled to Spencer on Monday for a non-conference meeting with the Rockets.
The Rockets are guided by senior guard Heavyn Kind, a first team All- Cloverbelt selection last season, and the Eastern Cloverbelt’s leading scorer at nearly 20 points a game.
Kind proved as good as advertised, scoring 22 points against the Falcons, 14 alone in the first half. Despite Kind’s out-pouring the Falcons only trailed 22-19 at the break thanks their balanced offense.
Bridgett Pogodzinski, Sydney Falteisek, Sommer Brodhagen and Adriana Fuentes all scored multiple buckets in that first half.
The second was a back and forth contest. The Rockets were able to get to the line 21 times but only converted seven free throws, and it was a 36-38 game with 30 seconds to go.
Falteisek weaved through traffic and tied things up, but a Kind miss was recovered by Spencer’s Jorie Meyer for a put-back with one second remaining to give the Rockets a 40-38 win.
Pogodzinski and Faltiesek led Abby with 13 and 12 points. Funtes had six points, Brodhagen had four and Alea Graff finished with three points.
